James Dabbs James Dabbs was born in 1782 in Union County, South Carolina, and died Dec. 19, 1841 in Otterville, Jersey County, Illinois. He was a son of Nathaniel & Elizabeth (Haney) Dabbs both Virginians from Goochland & Lunenburg Counties, who'd lived & reared their family in Union Co., South Carolina. Their son...James Dabbs and wife Mary Harris married abt 1802 in Union Co., South Carolina living there briefly before moving on to Barren Co., Kentucky, where they lived a few short years until 1818 when they moved with their extended families into the newly opened Northwest Territory which included what became their home state of Illinois. James & Mary were near Wood River in Madision Co., IL and enumerated on the 1820 federal census as (one male and one female age 26-45) along with four males and one female age 10-16 (William, Samuel and James Jr; one female and male unknown) and five males and one female under age 10 (John, George, Jesse, Elias and Susannah, one male unknown). By the spring of 1826 James & Mary had settled on section 9 in Otter Creek Twp in Greene County, which would become what is now Jersey Co., IL. James & Mary lived out their lives there with their son Jesse Dabbs nearby. Jesse having settled on the west of Otter Creek owned a mill at the mouth of Sugar Hollow located where Otter Creek empties into Sugar Creek. James Dabb's wife Mary (Harris) Dabbs was born in 1788 in Union County, South Carolina, and died Sept. 8, 1852 in Otterville, Jersey County, Illinois. James Dabbs and his wife Mary (Harris) Dabbs were both buried in Dabbs Cemetery, Otter Creek Township, Otterville, Jersey County, Illinois. ------------ James Dabbs settled on section 9, in Otter Creek township in the spring of 1826. He was a native of South Carolina, and was married in that state, in 1802. Several years after that even they emigrated to Barren county, Ky., where they resided until 1819, when they removed to the vicinity of Wood river, Madison county, Ill., form which place they came here, as stated. Jesse Dabbs, a son, was a resident of the county until 1875, when he died. James Dabbs and his wife Mary were worthy members of the pioneer band. He died a resident of the county, Dec. 19, 1841, his wife living until Sept. 8, 1852. Jesse Dabbs, father of Joshua Dabbs, settled on the west of Otter Creek. His grandfather was Nathaniel Dabbs, Sr. and great grandparents Joseph Dabbs and Nanny Hoggatt of Goochland and Lunenburg Counties., VA. Jesse Dabbs was born on 22 Dec 1817 in Barren Co., Kentucky. He died in 1875 in Jersey Co., IL. He was buried in Dabbs Cemetery, Otter Creek Township, Jersey Co., Illinois. Jesse married Mathilda Marsh about 1837 in Jersey Co., IL. Mathilda was born in 1818 in Missouri. Joshua Dabbs Joshua Dabbs was a son of Jesse and Mathilda (Marsh) Dabbs and grandson of James Dabbs - Joshua Elias Dabbs's obituary - Joshua Elias Dabbs, born 03-15-1841, Grafton, Jersey County, Illinois, died 01-10-1928, buried Rosedale cemetery. Joshua Elias Dabbs, 86, born at Grafton, March 15, 1841 and after an illness of 6 weeks died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. James Danielson of Alton, on January 10, 1928. When his country had need of him during the Civil War, he enlisted in Company A, 13th US Infantry and saw service at Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Steelville, Maynes Bluff, Champion's Hill, Black River Bridge, Battle of Chickamauga, Seige of Nashville, Jackson Mill and while carrying the colors at the battle of Vicksburg, May 19, 1863, he was wounded. On July 31, 1865 he received his honorable discharge. On March 24, 1866 he Married Susan Elizabeth Worthey. Many years ago he was converted and joined Otterville Baptist Church. He later joined First Baptist Church in Jerseyville. He was also a member of Lowe Post GAR. Mrs Dabbs died January 9, 1917, and on October 17, 1918 he married Katherine Dabbs of Otterville who survives him. He is survived by 6 children Mrs. Ernest Wedding and Pearl S. Dabbs of Jerseyville, Mrs. James Danielson of Alton, Mrs. Geo. (Cora) Spangle and A. J. Dabbs of Rosedale and Bert L. Dabbs of near Grafton; 16 grandchildren; 11 g-grandchildren; 1 sister, Mrs. Mary J. Houston of Kansas City, Missouri and 1 brother, E. E. Dabbs of Jerseyville. 4 children preceded him in death. The body was brought to the home of Mrs. Wedding of Jerseyville. Rev. Jenkins officiated at services at Rosedale church. Burial was in Rosedale cemetery. The GAR accompanied the body to the cemetery. Patrick Lynch presented a silk flag and marker to the family. Daughters of Veterans also presented a flag. -------------------------- Joshua Dabbs's wife Susan Elizabeth (Worthy) Dabbs's obituary - Susan Elizabeth (Worthy) Dabbs, born 02-23-1843, Rome, Kanney? County, Tennessee, died 01-09-1917. Susan Elizabeth (Worthy) Dabbs, 73 years, 10 months, 17 days, passed away, after a long illness, at her home in Rosedale, Illinois, January 9, 1917. She came to Jersey County with her parents in October, 1850, and settled 3 miles northwest of Otterville. She professed faith in Christ in the fall of 1863, and united with Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Otterville but later joined the Baptist Church and remained steadfast unto the end. She united in marriage with J. E. Dabbs March 24, 1866. To this union were born 10 children, 6 of whom survive: Mrs. Elizabeth Wedding and Pearl Dabbs of Jerseyville; Mrs. James Danielson and Andrew J. Dabbs of Rosedale; Mrs. Geo. Spangle of Newbern and Bert L. Dabbs of Quarry Township. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband, 3 sons, 3 daughters, 14 grandchildren, and 1 sister. --------- Joshua Dabbs's wife Susan Elizabeth (Worthy) Dabbs's was a daughter of John Jackson Worthey. John Jackson Worthey was born circa 1817 in Tennessee or Georgia and died on September 29, 1872 in Jersey County, Illinois. John married Elizabeth Hires circa 1838. Elizabeth was born circa 1820 in Tennessee (or South Carolina) and died before July 1868, when John remarried. Elizabeth may have died a few years after their last child, circa 1851, unless there were more children who have not been found. John, Elizabeth and five of their children were found in Smith County, Tennessee in 1850. Living with them was a twenty-five year old Susan Worthy, born in Tennessee, possibly a sister or other relative of John. John, age 34, claimed he was born in Georgia. Living near John and Elizabeth in Smith County in 1850 were two separate Hires families that may be Elizabeth’s relatives. These were a Mary Hires (probably a widow), age 43, and seven children, all born in Tennessee; and a Henry Hires, age 54 and born in South Carolina, with his wife and eight children, all born in Tennessee. John and Elizabeth Worthey came to Jersey County in October 1850 and settled three miles northwest of Otterville. After Elizabeth died, John married Phoebe Richey on July 29, 1868 in Jersey County. Phebe was previously married to Jesse Petty and after John’s death she married James E. Case. In 1880 Phoebe was in Otter Creek Township, and living with her was her grandson, P. Simkins, probably a child of James Case. The children of John Jackson Worthy and his 1st wife Elizabeth (Hires) Worthy were-David Worthey, born circa 1839 and died in 1902 in Illinois; Leaner Catherine Worthey, born on December 12, 1840 in Tennessee, and died on April 30, 1929 in Jersey County, married William Washington Dabbs; John Worthey, born about 1843; Susan Elizabeth Worthey, born on February 23, 1843 in Tennessee, died on January 9, 1917 in Rosedale, Jersey County, IL; James Worthey born about 1847, was the only child living with his father in 1870, was not found in the 1880 census, may have married Emma Rowden on October 5, 1890. James was 43 and Emma was 44, so both were probably married previously. They were married by J. E. Dabbs. J.P, Emma Worthy was found in the 1900 census, living at Rosedale. She was a widow and living with her son, Ernest E. Rowden. Her husband James must have died in the 1890s. Emma may have been Emma McCullah/McCollor who married a Miles F. Rowden on January 4, 1880. Miles apparently died on December 18, 1882. Emma may have married for a third time to a George T. Poulson on October 1, 1903. There was an obituary for a James Worthy who died January 14, 1900 at Rosedale, age about 55 years. No relatives were named. John Worthy and Elizabeth (Hires) Worthy's son Henry N. Worthey was born about 1851. Henry Worthy married Virginia Thompson on September 4, 1874 in Jersey County. Henry was a farmer Lavaca, Texas by 1880, probably moving there circa 1877 (birth of son). Virginia was listed as having consumption. Their children were: A. C. Worthy, born circa 1877; and William Worthy, born circa 1879, both born in Texas. Henry and family were not found after 1880. Child of John Jackson Worthy and his 2nd wife Phoebe Richey was-Sarah Matilda Worthey, born May 14, 1869 in Otterville, and died on November 12, 1943 in Jerseyville, buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville. Although her mother Phoebe was still living after her third marriage to James E. Case, Sarah seemed to be living with a Kenneda family in Otter Creek in 1880 census. Sarah married Leslie Louis Hooper, probably his second wife. No first marriage for Sarah was found. Leslie Louis Hooper, son of Henry Hooper, was born on January 18, 1859 and died on June 2, 1934, buried in White Cemetery, Otter Creek. (2) David Worthey, Son of John Jackson Worthey, was born in April 1839 and died in 1902. He married Nancy Elizabeth Hancock, daughter of Camp Hancock and Serilda Pittman, on July 2, 1871 in Jersey County, Illinois. Nancy was born on September 28, 1856 in Illinois and died on February 15, 1930, buried in Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville. (3) Nancy used the name Elizabeth. David may have been previously married. There is a record for a David Worthey who married an Emeline Blissett on April 16, 1864 in Jersey County. David appeared to be a more prosperous member of the Worthey family. In December 1889 he and his wife held a ball for either young people or neighbors. “Quite a number of our friends from the north side, among whom we noticed the Misses Stella, Lena and Lottie Dowdall, Lulu Spangle, Louesa Henso and Nellie Glass, and the Messrs. John Dowdall, John Falkner, Tom Cummings, Charley Dowdall, Nat Scott and Billie Keys of Otterville, attended a ball at the residence of David Worthy, three miles and a half west of Otterville. A good time was reported and the guests retired at a late hour, having spent a very pleasant evening.” In 1880, David was a farmer in Otter Creek. He stated his mother was born in South Carolina. Living with the family were Nancy’s siblings, George, Henry and Mary Hancock, the children of Camp Hancock. After David died, Nancy Elizabeth married Bartholomew C. Milford, April 23, 1903. Bartholomew, 1839 – 1918) was a farmer and an ordained CP deacon, serving churches in Otterville and Newbern. In 1910 her son Newell was living with them. Bartholomew was age 71 and Elizabeth (Nancy) was only 52. Living next door were her daughter Gertrude with her husband Russell Hutchinson. Bartholomew died in 1918 and Elizabeth may have remarried. However, her tombstone in Oak Grove Cemetery reads Elizabeth Worthey Milford, 1856-1930. She was buried in the same plot as her daughter Gertrude and son Newell. In the Hutchinson family history is the circa 1909 photograph that includes Nancy Elizabeth and her second husband, “Tuck” Milford. David and Nancy Elizabeth had ten children, only eight were living by 1900, seven by 1910, but only seven have been found. They were: Charles E. Worthey, born circa 1872 and died on February 14, 1944 at Belltown, Illinois. He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Alton. Dora E. Worthey, born circa 1875, married John Keller on October 19, 1893 in Jersey County. Nona B. Worthey, born May 3, 1882, and died on January 17, 1954 at her daughter’s home in Alton, Illinois. Nona married George Vinson, Jr. on April 27, 1899 in Jersey County and they resided in the Nutwood area. Leroy Worthey, born November 1884, resided in Los Angeles, California by 1954. Leslie Worthey, born November 1889, resided in Eldorado, Illinois by 1954. Gertrude B. Worthey, born on January 14, 1891, and died on June 13, 1968 in Jerseyville, Jersey County. She was buried on Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville. She married Russell Hutchinson on March 10, 1909 (see Hutchinson family history). They had no children, but did have a number of “foster” children. They were: Opal Hutchinson, daughter of Russell’s brother Elvin and a Janet(t). I have a note from a trip to Jersey County that Janett was adopted, though Gertrude’s obituary stated that Janette was a foster daughter. Mrs. Gertrude Hutchinson, 77, of 311 Sheridan, Jerseyville, died at 3:05 a.m. today at the Jersey Community Hospital. She was born Jan. 14, 1891, the daughter of the late David and Elizabeth Hancock Worthy. Surviving are her husband, Russell, of Jerseyville; two foster daughters, Mrs. Opal Walker of Centralia, Mo., and Mrs. Janet Kappler of Jerseyville; four foster grandchildren; four foster great-grandchildren; and one brother Leslie Worthey of Eldorado. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Gospel Assembly Church, the Rev. Harry Frazer officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove cemetery. Friends may call at the Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Saturday until 1 p.m. Sunday, and then at the church. Newell J. Worthey, born March 1895, resided in Quincy, Illinois by 1954. He married Ellen Ruth Peters on January 3, 1922 in Boone, Boone County, Iowa. Newell died on June 9, 1965 and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery. He served in World War I. Possible Family of John Jackson Worthey A George Anderson Worthey resided in Otter Creek in 1870. He was age 38 and there was no wife listed. His children were born in Texas. This may be the George A. Worthey who witnessed, and may have written, John’s 1872 “Will.” The mother of this George was Dica/Dicey, who was living with George in 1870. George had a river boat that he carried cargo up and down the Mississippi River. George had twin children born on the river boat. George married an Elizabeth Reed first and had three or four children by her. She died in 1870 and he married Isabella Carson Devlin in 1873. She had married a Dabbs first and had one child by him. George was in Freestone, Texas in 1880. George and Isabella did not leave Jersey County until about 1878. They had a daughter, Willie Bell. Jesse E. Dabbs, was the son of Samuel Dabbs, who was a brother of James Dabbs, and an Uncle of W. W. Dabbs. His probate was filed in October 1873 by his second wife, Isabel Dabbs, administrator. According to papers in Jesse’s probate file in 1873, Isabel had re-married before the estate was settled (her surname changed in the documents). This was the Isabel Dabbs who married George (Andrew) Worthy on January 1, 1874 in Jersey County. Jesse Dabbs and Isabel Devlin had a son, James Dabbs born circa 1873, not long before Jesse’s death (not in birth index). Isabel and George Worthy moved to Texas in the mid to late 1870s, taking with them James Dabbs and the children of Isabel and George. Armel, George Worthy’s father, was in Monroe County, Tennessee in 1830. In 1840 he was in Madison County, Illinois. Then in 1850 they were in Calhoun County, Illinois. In 1870 Armel was not found, but his sons George and Absalom were in Jersey County. Armiel or Armel Worthy married a Dica Goins and had at least six sons: Absalom born circa 1818 in Georgia; Reuben, born circa 1828 in Tennessee; Benjamin, born 1830 in Tennessee; George, born 1834 in Tennessee; William, born 1837 in Illinois; George Anderson, born circa 1838 in Tennessee. Shirley Parker, a descendant of George A. Worthey sent the following information: My grandfather was George Anderson Worthey, born in Monroe County, Tenn. according to the Calhoun County, Illinois 1850 census. His parents were Armil Worthey and Dica Goins born in the late 1800’s George married twice. Mary Elizabeth Reed on March 2, 1856 in Bexar County, Texas; Isabelle Carson Develin Dabbs on December 31, 1873 in Jerseyville, Illinois. George died February 4, 1873. There were six little Worthey girls in Texas when he died of pneumonia. His and Mary Elizabeth Reed’s son, Van, lived around my ggrandmother, Isabelle, in Texas. Van married a blind lady in Texas. I have a picture of them with their small dog which I inherited from my Dad, the oldest son of Ettie Worthey Vaughn. I also have a picture of George in his uniform My grandmother Ettie said that he changed sides after living in Texas in the 1850’s and 60’s He went from the South to the North. I am very interested in the William Worthey in Eddy, Texas. I have found several of George’s brothers, but I have not found anything on William since I found George and him in Bexar County in 1860. I also found Dica with George in 1870 Taking care of his and Mary’s children. ----------------------------- Joshua and Susan (Worthy) Dabbs had 10 children-Bertram "Bert" L. Dabbs, Andrew L. Dabbs, Pearl S. Dabbs, Rosa Elizabeth Dabbs, Cora Mae Dabbs, Emma Dabbs, Jason E. Dabbs, Louis E. Dabbs, Linda J. Dabbs, and Sarah E. Dabbs. (1) Joshua and Susan (Worthy) Dabbs's son Bertram "Bert" L. Dabbs's obituary - Bertram "Bert" L. Dabbs, born 07-18-1882, Rosedale, Jersey County, Illinois, died 05-13-1965, buried 05-16-1965, Rosedale cemetery. Bertram L. Dabbs, 82 years, 9 months, 25 days, died unexpectedly at 7 am last Thursday at his home near Rosedale. Mr Dabbs was an extensive landowner in the western part of Jersey County, had accompanied his son-in-law, Roy Schallenberg, to see some cattle and his death occurred as he was getting out of the truck after returning home. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, May 16, at 2 pm at the Rosedale cemetery. Mr Dabbs was a son of the late Joshua & Susan (Worthey) Dabbs and was born at Rosedale July 18, 1882. He had spent all of his life in Jersey County where he had engaged in farming. His marriage to Miss Sophia (Miller) Dabbs took place on January 21, 1903. Mr. Dabbs was a member of Full Moon Lodge No. 341, AF & AM, and the Modern Woodman of Grafton and Jersey County Farm Bureau. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Sophia Dabbs, 2 sons, Ernest and Herbert Dabbs, and 1 daughter, Mrs. Roy Schallenberg, all of the Grafton vicinity, 3 grandchildren, and 4 g-grandchildren. 1 son, Albert Leroy Dabbs, preceded him in death. -------------------------- Bertram "Bert" L. Dabbs's wife Sophia Mae (Miller) Dabbs's obituary - Sophia Mae (Miller) Dabbs, born 12-16-1893, Grafton, Jersey County, Illinois, died 05-01-1981, buried Rosedale cemetery. Sophia Mae Dabbs, 97, died at 5 am May 1 at Eunice Smith Extended Care Facility in Alton where she had been a resident since October, 1980. She had made her home with her daughter Sylva Mae Schallenberg in Grafton until her recent illness. Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Robert Patterson and Rev. Leonard Todd officiated. Interment was in Rosedale cemetery. She was born December 16, 1893 in Grafton, a daughter of the late Charles & Nancy (Matthews) Miller. She was married to Bert L. Dabbs January 21, 1903; he died May 13, 1965. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Schallenberg, 2 grandchildren and 2 g-g-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 3 sons, 1 granddaughter, 1 grandson, 4 sisters and 1 brother. Memorials may be given to Rosedale United Methodist church, where she was a member and the heart fund. ---------------------- Bertram "Bert" and Sophia (Miller) Dabbs had 4 children-Ernest Bertman Dabbs, Herbert S. Dabbs, Sylvia Mae Dabbs, and Albert Leroy Dabbs. ----------------------- (1a) Bertram "Bert" and Sophia (Miller Dabbs's son Ernest Bertman Dabbs's obituary - Ernest Bertman Dabbs, born 06-11-1903, Jersey County, Illinois, died 07-29-1969, buried 08-01-1969, Rosedale cemetery. Ernest Bertman Dabbs, 66 years, 1 months, 18 days, was a well-known farmer of the Grafton vicinity. He died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, July 29. He was dead on arrival at Alton Memorial Hospital. Visitation hours were held at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Services were held there Friday August 1 at 11 am. Interment was in Rosedale cemetery. Mr Dabbs was a son of Mrs. Sophia M. (Miller) Dabbs and the late Bert L. Dabbs and was born in Jersey County on June 11, 1903. He was a member of Jersey County Farm Bureau and formerly served on its Board of Directors. He was a member of Grafton Lodge No. 341 AF & AM, Scottish Rite Consistory and Ainad Temple East St. Louis Shrine. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Adele Dabbs of Grafton, 2 sons, Harold L. of Alton and David D. of Florissant, Missouri, his mother, Mrs. Sophia Dabbs, 1 sister, Mrs. Roy Shallenberg, and 1 brother Herbert S. Dabbs, all of Grafton and 4 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, 1 brother, Albert, and 1 daughter, Mrs. Virginia Campbell. ---------------- (1aa) Ernest and Freda Dabbs's son David Dale Dabbs's obituary - David Dale Dabbs, 72, died at 12:05 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at his home in Cape Coral, Fla. from cancer. David was born in Grafton, Ill., on Sept. 21, 1940, the son of the late Freda and Ernest Dabbs. He lived and worked on the family farm in Jersey County until he graduated from Alton High School in 1958. He married the late Janice (Metzler) Dabbs in 1961. After graduating with a degree in Accounting from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, he worked his entire career for General Motors in St. Louis and Wentzville, Mo. He played the trumpet and bass for years with several bands including 3 Hits & A Miss. He spent much time at the home he built at the Lake of the Ozarks where he met and married his current wife, Ann (Kasparova) Dabbs in 1996. After retirement, they moved to Florida where David enjoyed traveling the world, playing tennis, cycling, and most of all photography and producing videos of his trips. He is survived by his wife, Annie Dabbs; his daughter, Theresa “Tracy” (John) Siegel; and his son, D. Michael “Mike” (Martha) Dabbs, all of St. Louis; and three grandchildren, Joseph (Jennifer) Siegel of Lawrence Kans., Kirsten Siegel, and Ethan Dabbs, both of St. Louis. Died 04-02-1952. Charles Millard Chappell, a farmer of the Delhi vicinity was found dead in the barn at his farm home about nine o'clock Monday morning, February 4, by his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Dabbs Chappell. Mr. Chappell had suffered from a heart condition for some time and usually informed his wife when he was leaving the house when he would be back. Monday morning when Mr. Chappell did not return at the time his wife expected him she called several times and upon receiving no answer went to the barn to investigate and found him dead. The decedent was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Chevalier Chappell and was born in Jersey County on December 14, 1885. His age at the time of death was sixty-six years, one month and twenty days. Mr. Chappell was for a number of years employed in Alton but for over a year had been engaged in farming. Survivng him in addition to his wife are three daughters, Mrs. James Jennings and Mrs. Raymond Telkamp of Jerseyville and Mrs. James P. Jennings of St. Louis, and one son, Charles (Bill) Chappell of Jerseyville. Edwards was born in Jerseyville, June 22, 1923, the son of the late Joseph Wry and Therza Blanch Medord Edwards. He was an electrician for 35 years, and retired as foreman of Wegman Electric Co., Wood River in March of 1981 due to illness. He was a member of NECA-IBEW 649. Edwards served in the United States Marine Corps from Oct 7, 1942 to Nov 9,1945 and from Nov 8, 1947 to Dec 7, 1951 as a staff sergeant in the Pacific, Bonganville and Norther Solomons. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 492, 20th District Commander 1972-73. Third Division Commander 1978-79. He was serving as department chairman of the state of Illinois Military Prepardness Commission and a member of the National Foreign Relations Commission. Yocom, 80 years and 13 days, widow of Claude M. Yocom, died Monday, April 29, 1968, 5:45 am, at Jersey Community hospital where she had been a patient for 9 days. The resident of 607 W. Mulberry, Jerseyville had been in ill for some time. Rev. Carlton Christenson officiated at the final rites held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 pm at First Baptist church of which she was a member. H. & Lucy (Mains) Wylder, early residents of Jersey County, and was born in Jersey County on April 16, 1886. Mrs. Yocom was a charter member of the Jersey County Home Bureau which is now the Jersey County Homemakers Extension Association, and member of the Jersey Community Hospital Auxiliary, Daughters of Union Veterans, and Jerseyville Woman's Club. Yocom of Jerseyville, 4 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 2 g-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mrs. Matt (Elizabeth) Heneghan of Decatur and Miss Isabell Wylder of Clayton, Missouri, and 1 Brother, Robert M. Truman Randall "Randy" Yocom, 16, student at Jersey Community high school, received fatal injuries in a motorcycle-truck collision north of Jerseyville at 6:25 pm Monday, June 11, 1956. The youth was brought to Jersey Community hospital in the Jacoby ambulance for emergency treatment, and his death occurred at 9:50, 5 miles south of Jerseyville as he was being moved by ambulance to St. luke hospital in St. Louis. An inquest will be held later by coroner Rodney Jacoby. The truck involved in the accident was driven by James V. Hooper, both vehicles were traveling north and Hooper had signaled that he was turning into the alfalfa field just south of the former MacKelden home. Yocom was thrown from the cycle when it struck the front wheels of the truck. Randy was born in Jerseyville, May 28, 1940, a son of Truman R. & Vera F. (Sayer) Yocom. He marked his 16th birthday and would have been a junior student at Jersey Community high school next year. The boy had been active in 4-H work in the county, was a member of the Jerseyville Baptist church, and the Jerseyville Chapter, Order of Demolay. He then opened and operated McDanel Department Store in Jerseyville, along with Jerseyville Coin and Laundry. Upon the selling of both businesses, Mark purchased the Wood River Dairy Queen, which he operated for 17 years, making significant improvements during that time. He married the former Doris Devening on March 10, 1956 in Alton, and she survives. Mark is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gregg and Pattie McDanel of Jerseyville; a daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Bob McAninch of Godfrey; three grandchildren, Joshua McDanel, Brady and Mack McAninch; his mother-in-law, Hazel Devening of Jerseyville; and a sister-in-law and her family, Betty McDanel of Florissant, Mo. His only brother, William R. McDanel Jr., and his father-in-law, Percy Devening, have preceded him in death. Charles Gregg McDanel and Anna Louise (Kirchner) McDanel had these children-Mamie Amelia McDanel (1897-1998), married a man who's last name was Krinard; Anna McDanel; Ethel Elizabeth McDanel (1900-2002); Georgana Louise McDanel born 1900; Charles G. Memorials may be to the donor's choice. ---------- Oliver McDanel's wife Ruth (Calame) McDanel's father Harvey Calame's obituary - Mar. 17, 1939 - Harvey Calame, 59, virtually a lifelong resident of Godfrey township where he had been a farm owner and farm-worker since youth, was found dead at 8:30 a.m. today near the home on the Jerseyvllle road opposite the Hawley farm where he had been residing alone. His body was found by A. T. Hawley and an employe, James Bowman, Deputy Coroner Klunk said, when they went to Calame's home to seek him. Calame had not been seen since last Thursday, the coroner was told, and although he sometimes left the place with relatives and friends, Hawley who employed him, became concerned lest he be ill. When Hawley and Bowman approached the Calame house, they observed his coat hanging near a woodpile In the back yard. Near at hand, they observed a saw. Calame was not in the house, and they started on a search of the yard and at edge of a field, perhaps 50 feet to the rear of the house, came on his body. Deputy Coroner Klunk expressed the belief that Calame might have paused to rest while sawing wood, and that he was fatally stricken as he walked to the rear of the premises. Klunk estimated he might have been dead for two days. An inquest will be held in an effort to determine- the exact cause of death. She was employed at Western Cartridge Co. in East Alton for a few years during World War I and was a member of Upper Alton Baptist Church and Alton Order of Eastern Star Chapter No 775. She married Albert R. Krinard in 1920 in Alton. He died March 1974. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law Jean and John M. He was born in Alton to Albert Roger and Mamie McDanel Krinard. He was of the Baptist faith, but after he retired and moved to Mountain View he attended First United Methodist. He served in the Army from August 1950 through August 1953. He attended Idaho State graduating in 1957 with a bachelors degree in forestry. He earned a masters degree in forestry from Yale University. He was employed as a research forester at the Southern Forest Experiment from 1957 until his retirement. After this he and his wife moved to Mountain View where they have enjoyed the mountain music and crafts of the area. He will be greatly missed by his family and freinds. Survivors include his devoted wife of 40 years, Willough Dean Krinard; two daughters, Gloria Krinard of Mountain View and Jean Evanich of Los Angeles; and one sister Ethel Johnson of Alton. McDanel, 24, of Long Beach, Calif. The message gave no particulars other than to state that his death had been unexpected, and they were awaiting further Information today. Louis McDanel was born and reared at Dow, and had been residing in Long Beach since last February when he completed a four-year period of service In the U. S. Navy. He had been married last Dec. 22 to Miss Ethal Brannon of Seattle. Wash., and they had settled in Long Beach immediately after his discharge from naval service. David Dabbs David Dabbs was born in 1806 in Kentucky. He was a son of James and Mary (Harris) Dabbs. He married Mary Ann (maiden name unknown) about 1837 in Illinois. Mary was born in 1816 in Ohio. They had the following children-Martha Ann Dabbs born in 1838 in Ohio; George W. Dabbs born in 1839 in Scott Co., Illinois; John W. Dabbs born in 1843 in Scott Co., Illinois; and Robert Dabbs born in Apr 1850 in Scott Co., Illinois. John W. Dabbs John Wesley Dabbs was born abt. 1811 in Kentucky. He was a son of James and Mary (Harris) Dabbs. John W. Dabbs died in Dec 1866 in Sangamon Co., Illinois. He was buried in Divernon Township Cemetery, Sangamon Co., Illinois. John made a settlement in 1831 on section 24 in Rosedale Township, Jersey Co., IL (then a part of Greene Co., IL), which he purchased from the government the next year and was a resident there for years. John and his family had moved to Sangamon Co., IL by the 1840's. They were found there in Sangamon Co., IL in the 1860 census, with their four children: George W. Dabbs, age 24; Almina J. Dabbs, age 20; Thomas J. Dabbs, age 10; and William H. Dabbs, age 7. John must have been a prosperous farmer, his real estate was valued at $20,000, personal estate $1,500. By 1870, after John died, Martha was still living in Sangamon County with her second husband, Benjamin Fuller and her Dabbs children George W. Dabbs, Thomas J. Dabbs, and William Dabbs. Martha married 2nd a Benjamin A. Fuller on July 12, 1868. In 1880 a Martha Dabbs was the head of household with George W. and William H. William H. Dabbs was disabled. Elmina Dabbs married a Barnes. In this county, April 11, 1861, he wedded Elmina Jane Dobbs, who was born and reared in Jersey county, Illinois, a daughter of John Dobbs, one of the pioneers of Illinois. Her death occurred in 1878. There were three sons and three daughters by that marriage. In 1879 Mr. Barnes wedded Mrs. Elizabeth Dayton, nee Brockman, who was born in Jersey county, Illinois, and was a cousin of his first wife. . . . In 1864 Jan 10 - George Dabbs, of Jerseyville, Illinois enlisted as a Private 10 Jan 1864, Company I, 144th Infantry Regiment Illinois, mustered out as a Private 27 May 1864, Union Soldier (American Civil War). George W. Dabbs married Elizabeth Jane Burton daughter of John Burton and Jane on 13 Nov 1851 in Calhoun Co., Illinois. Elizabeth was born in 1835/1836 in Calhoun Co., Illinois. She died on 18 Nov 1880. George and Elizabeth (Burton) Dabbs had the following children-John James Dabbs born on 25 Sep 1853, died about 1900; Everett Dabbs born in 1860/1861 in Missouri; Ephraim W.
