Westfall, who lives northwest of the city, was en route to his home Sunday morning about 2:30 o'clock, when a Ford sedan he was driving crashed into a car parked in front of the Merle Stout grocery in the Lafayette pike. The Westfall machine was turned over by the force of the impact and the parked car knocked to the middle of the street. Captain Fred Grimes and Officer Charles Johnson of the police department were called to the scene. When they arrived Westfall was walking around and assisted the officers to right his overturned car. Westfall was placed in jail by officers, and had a slight cut on his head. He also complained of a headache. Apparently he was not seriously injured. At the jail a physician was called. He made an examination and gave the man a hypodermic. He ordered Jailer Ira Myers to watch the man and if his condition seemed worse to call a physician. Shortly before 7 o'clock, it was noticed that the heavy snoring of the slumbering man had practically ceased. A physician was sent for and it was determined that the man had died. Coroner A. L. Loop was called and a post-mortem examination held. It was determined that death was caused by a hemorrhage resulting from a fractured skull. The hemorrhage had clotted, and it was the clot that was responsible for Westfall's death. The coroner stated that the fracture was not externally discernible, pointing out the the case was remarkable in that a fracture existed and could not be detected. The hemorrhage he said, was on the inside of the skull and the exterior of the brain. The clot kept growing as the hemorrhage continued and death resulted. The coroner is of the opinion that the man struck his head when the car was overturned. He said that his verdict would be death as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Dayton Westfall was born in the New Richmond vicinity June 24, 1880, the son of George and Mary Oppy Westfall. He was united in marriage to Elsie Reynolds, of near Wingate, in 1901. (1aaaaa) John Christopher Westfall and Nina Atlanta Smith Westfall's son Capt James Edward Westfall's obituary - James Edward Westfall, Tuesday, May 15, 2012 - James Edward Westfall, 88, passed away on April 2, 2012 in Melbourne, Fla. He was born on Sept. 1, 1923, near Spencer, Owen County, Ind., to John Christopher and Nina Atlanta (Smith) Westfall. As a boy, many of his summers were spent working on family farms. Jim graduated from Greencastle High School in 1942. There he excelled at sports, especially basketball. Jim dreamed of an aviation career and wanted to serve his country, so with the onset of World War II he entered the U.S. Navy V-5 air cadet program. He completed pre-flight school courses at the University of Georgia (Athens) and went on to finish flight training at Pensacola Naval Air Station (Pensacola, Fla.). With his naval aviator wings and commission as an ensign, he was shipped to the South Pacific in 1944. In that theater of the war, he saw action primarily at the controls of the Douglas SBD Dauntless. After his return from combat in 1945, he was based at Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Naval Air Station. While there as a flight instructor in the Grumman TBM Avenger, he played a role in the search for Flight 19 -- the mysterious disappearance of five Avengers off the coast of Florida on Dec. 5, 1945, arguably the most famous aviation incident associated with The Bermuda Triangle. Briefly on inactive status following World War II, he worked for Aero Sales in Jacksonville, Fla., and operated a private flying school. Recalled to active duty, Jim was a flight instructor at Pensacola Naval Air Station before being assigned to the USS Boxer (CV-21) and USS Kearsarge (CV-33) during the Korean War. From the decks of these aircraft carriers he flew his favorite airplane: The Vought F4U Corsair. For part of this period he served as navigator aboard the oiler USS Chickaskia (AO-54). In the 1950s, Jim piloted the Lockheed R7V Super Constellation for MATS (Military Air Transport Service). His transport flights from Hickam Air Force Base (Honolulu, Hawaii) took him all over the world and into Southeast Asia at the beginning of the Vietnam War. He marked most of the 1960s with service in naval air reserve training commands at Jacksonville, Fla.; Glenview, Ill.; and Omaha, Neb. From 1967 to 1969, Jim was at the Pentagon (Washington, D.C.), where he was responsible for base programs on the staff of Vice Admiral Thomas F. Connolly, USN, Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Air) and namesake of the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. He retired from the United States Navy as a captain in 1971. Jim then moved to Longwood, Fla., where he worked in real estate for many years at Sweetwater Oaks and other developments. He relocated to Melbourne in 1990, settling at Indian River Colony Club (IRCC). After high school, Jim married June Alexander of Greencastle in 1942 and together they had one son in 1943, James E. Alexander (nee James E. Westfall Jr.). In 1947, he married Gayle E. Ellsworth of Oxford, Ind., a union that lasted until her death in 1998 and produced one son in 1948 -- Donald H. Westfall. Jim married Jessie H. McCarty of Melbourne, Fla., in 2003. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gayle, grandson Nathan D. Westfall, brother George F. Westfall, and sister Mary Lou (Westfall) Schnurpel. He is survived by his wife Jessie; sons James of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and Donald of Hays, Kan.; grandsons Philip M. Westfall of Titusville, Fla.; Brent Alexander of Indianapolis; J. Michael Alexander of Poland, Ind.; Joseph D. Alexander of Belle Union; granddaughter Jane (Alexander) Baschwit of Jamestown, Ind.; great grandchildren Robert, Joanna and Jadelyn of Jamestown; Bailey of Lebanon, Ind.; Jonathan of Putnamville; Skylar of Belle Union; Jake and Justin of Tennessee; great-great-grandson Dartanian of Lebanon; brother Robert J. Westfall of Plainfield; and sister Betty Jo (Westfall) McFarland Thomas of Greencastle. In private life, Jim was an outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. (1aa) Samuel C. Culbertson and Rebecca (Westfall) Culbertson's son T. W. Culbertson was born Oct. 25, 1828. He married Elizabeth Harper, and they had seven children-Frank Culbertson, Edmund Culbertson, Charlie Culbertson, William H. Culbertson, Harry Culbertson, Cora B. Culbertson, and Purley Culbertson.

(Note: Samuel C. Culbertson and Rebecca (Westfall) Culbertson's son T. W. CULBERTSON, farmer and stock-raiser; P. O. Greenville; was born Oct. 25, 1828, within sight of the place where he now resides; he is the son of Samuel Culbertson, a native of Pennsylvania, who was born in June, 1801, and emigrated with his family to this county at quite an early day, settling on a piece of land in Van Buren Township. At that time, this county was almost entirely covered over with dense forests and immense swamps; the labors of the pioneer had not yet made extensive inroads on the vast wilderness. He was united in marriage with Miss Rebecca Westfall in 1823; six children were born of this union, to wit: Orin, Mary J., T. W. Elizabeth and James; Orin and Elizabeth are deceased; the others are settled in this county. The privations and hardships of pioneer life soon told upon the health of the elder Culbertson, and in 1837, he was called to bid farewell to his family and take his departure to that “undiscovered country from whose bourne no traveler returns,” leaving a loving wife and six small children to contend with the trials and difficulties incident to frontier life his wife remained upon the homestead and survived him about sixteen years, dying in 1853. Our subject was quite small at the death of his father, after which he remained with his mother till her death, assisting in sustaining her and giving her the comforts of a home; he early learned the brickmason’s trade. His educational advantages were necessarily limited, as a pioneer’s life is one of constant exertion for sustenance, but what opportunities did offer in this direction were well improved. At the death of his mother, the home was broken up and he went to live with his sister, Mrs. Studabaker. Nov. 26, 1857, he celebrated his marriage with Elizabeth Harper; she is the daughter of William S. Harper, a native of Pennsylvania, who also emigrated to this county at quite an early day. Immediately after the marriage of our subject, he moved upon a piece of land in Sec. 7, which he had previously purchased; this was all in the woods, and he was obliged to clear off a spot large enough to erect a cabin on; this constituted the first home of his own; here, in the dense forest, he set out with his helpmeet, on the course of life, and by their own exertions they have caused the golden grain to wave where once stood the mighty forest; in his rich fertile farm, we again behold industry and frugality bountifully rewarded. They are the parents of seven children, to wit: Frank, Edmund, Charlie, William H., Harry, Cora B. and Purley, all of whom are yet living and residing under the parental roof. Mr. Culbertson, realizing the advantages of an education in this advanced day, is offering his children all the opportunities now afforded by this county in this direction, and they, we are glad to chronicle, are making good use of them. T. W. Culbertson's son Edmund Culbertson, the subject of this review, was reared upon his father's farm, assisting in the labors of field and meadow in the summer time and attending the country schools in the winter. He studied three years in the Greenville high school and later took a commercial course in the Greenville Business College. After completing his education he engaged in farming, which occupation he has since followed and is now, in connection with his brother, Charlie, operating their father's farm of two hundred and forty acres. He is also extensively engaged in stock raising. He was united in marriage July 24, 1884, to Elnora Baer, a daughter of Frederick and Mary Baer, at present residents of Springfield, Missouri. Their union has been blessed with five children, namely: Muriel E., Rolla W., Hazel E., Lloyd A. and Mary E. In his political affiliations Mr. Culbertson is a Democrat and since reaching his majority has been prominent in politics, being often a delegate to county and congressional conventions, and in the spring of 1900 he received the nomination at the hands of his party for county auditor, having a majority of four hundred and four over four competitors. Fraternally he is a member of Greenville Lodge, No. 195. I. O. O. V. He is a rising and popular young man, who counts his friends by the hundreds. His business integrity is established on a sound foundation and he is prosperous, capable and influential.* * * * This family biography is one of 659 biographies included in The History of Darke County, Ohio published in 1880 by W.
