Family Funeral & Obituary Notices-Page 1
Over the years I have saved the funeral, memorial, and obituary notices of deceased family members obtained from newspapers and funeral homes, or sent to me by other family members after the death of their loved one. I have also found some obituaries on the internet at this Jersey County, Illinois historical and genealogy archives website-Jersey County, Illinois GenWeb and also at the Alton Telegraph Newspaper website-Alton Telegraph Newspaper
My mother saved many of these obituaries of deceased family members from newspaper clippings, and funeral home memorial cards, some even before I was born, and pasted them in an old picture album we had. A few years before my mother passed away she removed them from the old picture album which was in bad shape, and placed them in a newer album which I now have. The old obituary newspaper clippings and funeral home memorial cards my mother saved over the years are quite old and faded, and some are a bit torn.
Unfortunately I do not have the funeral or obituary notices of many of my deceased family members, but I have included on these pages those that I have.
Walter Edward Westfall
Walter Edward Westfall, R.R. 1, Pearl, formerly of the Fieldon area, died at 2 p.m. March 17, 1977 at Illini Hospital in Pittsfield. He was born April 4, 1897 in Jersey County, the son of Jasper and Frances (McCaulley) Westfall. He was a veteran of World War I, and a retired farmer.
He is survived by his wife Lovie (Kraushaar) Westfall whom he married in February of 1921, a daughter Mrs. Joseph (Mildred) Alben of Godfrey; a son Walter C. Westfall of Pearl; a sister Mrs. Anna Pitt of Jerseyville; two brothers, Floyd Westfall of Medora and Jasper Westfall of Alton; a half sister Eva Haag of Alton; one grandchild and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 1;30 p.m. March 19 at Gubser's Funeral Home with Brother Joseph Rowlett of the Christian Church of Pearl officiating. Burial was in Grimes-Neely Cemetery, rural Jerseyville. The family designated the American Diabetic Association as a memorial.
Lovie Katherine Westfall
Lovie K. Westfall, 91, died Sunday, March 19, 1995 at Clarkston Court Nursing Home in Pittsfield. She had previously lived in Pearl and Fieldon. She was a homemaker born Feb. 10, 1904 in Jersey County near Fieldon, a daughter of the late Charles and Caroline (Haushalter) Kraushaar. She married Walter Edward Westfall in Alton Feb. 21, 1921, and he died March 17, 1977.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law Mildred and Joseph Alben of Godfrey; and a son Walter C. Westfall of Pearl; a grandson Russell Thompson of Wood River; three great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Two sisters, Elizabeth Horn and Freda Hewitt; and a brother Raymond Kraushaar preceded her in death.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. Wednesday until service time at 2 p.pm. at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, Robert Kendall will officiate. Burial will be at Grimes-Neely Cemetary west of Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Mildred M. Alben
Mildred M. Alben, 94, of Bethalto, passed away at 10:21 am on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at Eunice Smith Home in Alton. She was born on April 20, 1922, in Alton, the daughter of Edward and Lovie (Kraushaar) Westfall. Mildred worked for several different factories in Alton, for 10 years including Glass Works, LaClede Steel, and Olin Corp. She then worked for the next 15 years and the Honkey Variety Store and Bickhouse Sporting Goods. She was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto and a former member of St. Mary’s and St. Kevin’s Catholic Church. She helped for many years at St. Kevin’s in different parts of the church. She was involved with the Wood River Sportsmen Club and Jerseyville Senior Citizens. Her hobbies included crocheting and waxing cars. Mildred married Joseph Alben on November 11, 1944, at Cherry Street Baptist Church and later remarried in the Catholic Church at St. Mary’s in Alton. He preceded her in death in 2000. Survivors include one son and his wife, Russell and Lois Thompson of Rosewood Heights; three grandchildren and their spouses, Terri and Mike Harvey of Alton, Melanie and Dave Moore of Alton, Lesley and Alan Kolesa of Troy; six great grandchildren, Nicholas, Whitney, Alexis, Jenna, Tyler, Lily; four great-great grandchildren, Logan, Kelsie, Corbin, Olivia; and one brother Walter Westfall of Pearl, IL. In addition to her husband, Mildred was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be held from 11:30 am until time of service at 1 pm, Friday, September 9, 2016, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Fr. Tom Leibler officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton. Memorials may be given to Masses, or Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
Joseph V. Alben
Joseph V. Alben, 87, died at 9:50 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000 at Saint Anthony's Hospital in Alton. A son of the late John and Lucia (Virgo) Alben, he was born Feb. 18, 1912 in Alton. An U.S. Army veteran, he was employed as a mill operator at Laclede Steel. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Alton Sportsmen's Club in Godfrey. He and the former Mildred Westfall were united in marriage Nov. 11, 1944, in Alton. She survives. Also surviving are a stepson and his wife, Russell and Lois Thompson of Wood River, three grandchildren and their spouses, Terri and Mike Harvey of Alton, Melanie and David Moore of Alton and Lesley and Alan Kolesa of East Alton, five great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Whitney Harvey, Jenna Doolin, Tyler Moore and Alexis Heacox; two sisters, JoAnne Romano of Brighton and Josephine Mayhall of Jerseyville; and four brothers, Angelo Alben of Bethalto, Paul Alben of East Alton, Sam Alben of Brighton and Anthony Alben of Forrest Homes. He was preceded in death by a sister, Anna Alben, and a brother, Carl Alben. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Staten Funeral Home in Alton with a prayer service at 4 p.m. Father John Paul Klein will officiate at services at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton. Memorials may be given to masses or a charity of one's choice.
Mrs. Frances Westfall
Mrs. Frances Westfall died at her home near Fieldon, Illinois, Saturday January 18, 1936 at 10:00 p.m. aged 66 years, 2 months, and 2 days.
She was the beloved wife of Jasper Westfall. Funeral Tuesday, January 21st, at 2:00 p.m., from Gubser's Funeral Home, Rev. Howard S. Bushnell officiating. Interment in Grimes Cemetery.
Mrs. Caroline H. Kraushaar
Mrs. Caroline H. Kraushaar died Tuesday, July 27, 1937 at her home in Jerseyville, Ill. at 7:00 p.m. aged 56 years and 13 days. She was the beloved wife of Charles Kraushaar. Funeral services will be held at Jacoby Brothers' Chapel Thursday, July 29th, at 2:00 p.m. Rev. George R. Vawter officiating. Interment in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Charles Kraushaar
Charles Kraushaar, a retired farmer of Jerseyville, died suddenly at his home here Sunday evening, November 23, 1948 at eight fifty-five o'clock. An inquest was conducted by Coroner H. W. Gubser Monday evening and death was atributed to natural causes, acute dilation of the heart. Members of the jury were Clem Schleper, B. A. Marsden, jr., Fred woolsey, Edward McGowen, S. E. Stroud, and Aron Cope. Members of the Kraushaar household testified that the deceased had complained of difficulty breathing Sunday, but his condition was not considered critical. He was fatally stricken about eight forty-five o'clock and died before a physician could be summoned.
Mr. Kraushaar was the son of the late Frank and Julia (Albert) Kraushaar, and was born near Fieldon, July 4, 1875. He has resided in Jersey County all of his life. Surviving him are two daughters, Mrs. John Horn of Caseyville and Mrs. Edward Westfall of Fieldon, and one son, Raymond Kraushaar of Jerseyville; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held at the Gubser Funeral Home Wednesday, November 26, at two o'clock. The Reverand V. D. Gibson of Alton officiated and interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Miss Elizabeth Haushalter
Miss Elizabeth Haushalter died Saturday, November 11, 1961, at Collinsville, Illinois at 1:05 p.m. Christian Science services will be read at Jacoby Brothers' Funeral Home Tuesday, November 14th, at 1:30 p.m., Mrs. Margaret Leach reader. Interment in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call at Jacoby Brothers' Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Monday.
Mrs. Freda Hewitt
Mrs. Freda Hewitt of the Union Forest vicinity died Saturday morning, March 16, 1946 at 1;50 o'clock at St. Joseph's Hospital in Alton where she had been for treatment for the last seven weeks. Mrs. Hewitt was the daughter of Charles Kraushaar of Jerseyville, and the late Mrs. Caroline (Haushalter) Kraushaar, and was born in Jersey Conty on January 13, 1902. Her age at the time of death was 44 years, 2 months, and 3 days. Mrs. Hewitt was the widow of William A. Hewitt and until recently had operated a farm in the Union Forest vicinity.
Surviving Mrs. Hewitt are one daughter, Miss Helen Hewitt, and one son William Hewitt, both of Fieldon; her father, Charles Kraushaar of Jerseyville; two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Horn of Caseyville and Mrs. Lovie Westfall of Fieldon; and one brother, Raymond Kraushaar of Jerseyville. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon, March 18, at two o'clock at Jacoby Brothers' Chapel in Jerseyville. Reverand Vernel Gibson of Collinsville officiated and interment was in White Cemetery.
William A. Hewitt
William A. Hewitt, 52, of the Fieldon area died at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis Tuesday. Services will be conducted at the Union Forest Church Friday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. George Vawter. Burial will be in White Cemetery. Hewitt was born near Fieldon May 5, 1884. He farmed for 25 years. He became ill Nov. 1, and from that time was unable to return to his farming duties. He was the son of John and Mary McManus Hewitt. He is survived by his widow, one son, William A. Hewitt Jr.; one daughter, Helen Katherine Hewitt; two brothers, Fred and Leonard Hewitt of Fieldon, and three sisters, Mrs. Martha Raftis and Maggie Jones of Jerseyville, and Mrs. Stella Reed of Shipman.
Mrs. John Horn
Mrs. John Horn, 77, 201 Iowa, Waverly, Iowa, passed away Wednesday nigt, September 29, 1976 at the Waverly Municipal Hospital where she had been a patient for 10 days. Elizabeth M. Kraushaar was born July 12, 1899 in Fieldon, Ill., the daughter of Charles and Caroline (Haushalter) Kraushaar. On July 1st 1920 she was united in marriage to John P. Horn in East St. Louis, Ill. The couple lived in East St. Louis until 1939 when they moved to Caseyville, Ill. In 1964 they moved to Waverly. She was a member of the Grace Baptist Church in Waverly.
Survivers include her husband, John, one daughter, Mary, Mrs. Earl Gibson of Shell Rock, Ia., one sister, Mrs. Lovie Westfall of Pearl, Ill., nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.
Funeral services will be Saturday, October 2, 1;30 p.m. at the Grace Baptist Church in Waverly with the Rev. Royce Wolden officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, Cedar Falls.The Kaiser-Carson Funeral Home in Waverly is in charge of arrangements.
Raymond Charles Kraushaar
Final services for Raymond Charles kraushaar, 68, of 1008 Warren St., Jerseyville were held Nov. 17, 1975 at Jacoby Funeral Home with the Rev. Dorcie Hill officiating. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. His death occured at 8:15 a.m. on Nov. 15 at the Jersey Community Hospital. A retired truck driver, he was born Nov. 22, 1906 in Fieldon, a son of Charles and Caroline (Haushalter) Kraushaar. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge.
His survivors are his widow, Mrs. Mildred (Adams) Kraushaar; two sons, Clifford and Victor of Jerseyville; nine grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Lovie Westfall of Pearl and Lizzie Horn of Waverly, Iowa. His parents and one sister preceded him in death. The family designated the Heart Fund as a memorial.
Mrs. Evelyn Kraushaar
Evelyn Kraushaar, 82, died at 10:12 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, 1991, at St. Anthony's Hospital in Alton. Born in Greene County Jan. 16, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Phillip and Stella May (Hunt) Young.
Surviving are a son Clifford G. Kraushaar of Otterville; seven granchildren; three great-grandchildren; four sisters, Elknah Mowrey of Dutzow, MO., Ada Hartwick of Carrollton, Lola Ethel of Athens and Betty Birch of Jerseyville; and three brothers, Phillip T. Young of Carrollton, Allen T. Young of Jerseyville and Harold Young of Rockbridge. A sister Dorothy Garahan preceded her in death.
Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Jacoby-Schroeder Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services are at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Larry Hayes will officiate.
Burial is in Kane Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Assembly of God Church of Jerseyvile, where she was a member.
Mrs. Mildred B. Kraushaar
Mildred B. Kraushaar, 83, died at 8:10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Chesterfield Oct. 1, 1925, the daughter of the late William and Mahala "Ann" (Taylor) Adams. She was raised with her siblings on a farm near Chesterfield. She married Raymond Kraushaar and they resided in Jerseyville for many years until his death on Nov. 10, 1975. She was widely known in Jerseyville, where she worked in various establishments including the Diner, American Legion and for many years worked as a sales clerk at the Discount House. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and the ladies auxiliaries at the VFW and American Legion, all in Jerseyville.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Janet Kraushaar of Jerseyville; two granddaughters and their spouses, Nancy and Carl Clifford of Carrollton and Vickie and Ty Johnson of Jerseyville; four great-grandchildren, David, Jeremy and Dylan Clifford and Tyler Johnson; a brother, Robert Adams of Hardin; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Clara Woods of Alton and Georgia and Samuel Abbott of Carrollton. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, William Burnett; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Rose Marie Adams and Hazel and William Abbott; and three brothers, William, Willis "Junior" and Harry "Bud" Adams. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Mrs. Laura R. Coleman
Mrs. Laura R. Coleman, 76, of 1200 Marshall St., Alton, died today, January 26, 1976, at 5:55 am at Eunice Smith Nursing Home after an illness of 5 years. A native of Fieldon, she married Joseph Coleman, July 25, 1943, in Alton.
Besides her husband, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Arleigh (Frances) Reed of Alton; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Bessie Randall of Summerville, MO; a stepson, Ed Coleman of Godfrey; 1 grandchild; 7 step grandchildren; three brothers, Jasper Westfall of Alton, Floyd Westfall of Medora and Ed Westfall of Pearl; a sister, Mrs. Anna Pitt of Jerseyville and a half sister, Mrs. Eva Haag of Rosewood Heights.
Visitation begins after 4 pm. Friday at Gent Funeral Home, where a prayer service will be said at 7 pm. Friday. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 9 pm. Saturday at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church, where she was a member. Burial will be in St. Patrick's cemetery.
Mrs. Frances "Chic" Reed
Frances "Chic" Reed, 93, died at 5:35 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at Saint Anthony's Hospital. She was born Nov. 12, 1916, in Fieldon, to James A. and Laura R. (Westfall) Anderson. On Oct. 6, 1939, in Alton, she married Joseph A. Reed. He preceded her in death Nov. 28, 1990. She was a member of the VFW Post 1308 Ladies Auxiliary. Surviving are a son, James A. Reed of Alton, a cousin, Shirley Eschbach of Jerseyville, and other distant family members. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. services Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. The Rev. Steve Rice will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Memorials may be made to Eldercare Nursing Home. An online guestbook may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com.
Joseph Arleigh Reed
Arleigh Reed died November 28, 1990 at Christian Hospital in St. Louis after a short illness. A Navy World War II Veteran, he retired in 1976 as a bus driver and maintenance worker from the Alton School District 11 after years of service. Born 1914 in Greene County, he was the son of the late John and Nellie Amanda Perry Reed. He married the former Frances Chic Anderson on October 6, 1939 in Alton, IL. Surviving are his wife; a son, James Arleigh Reed of Alton; and three sisters, Bernice Hart and Lela Burch of Alton, and Lucille Ozee of Brighton. Services were conducted Saturday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Military rites were conducted at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto by Alton VFW Post of which he was a member. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Joseph I. Coleman
Services were conducted Friday afternoon at Gubser Funera Home for Joseph I. Coleman, 81, who died at 3:50 a.m. Dec. 21, 1982 at his residence, 206 Sherman St., Jerseyville. The Rev. V. Clay Noah officiated. He was born Dec. 8, 1901 in Racola, Mo., a son of the late James and Victoria (Robart) Coleman. The World War II veteran was retired from Olin Corp.
His survivors are his wife, Anna Westfall Griffin Coleman; one son, Edward of Elsah; a daughter, Bessie Randall of Panacea, Fla.; two stepsons, Harold Griffin of Washington and Virgil Griffin of Portland, Ore.; three step daughters, Viola Godar, Otterville, Eunice Kessler, Portland, Ore., Geneva McClintock, Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His first wife Laura Coleman died Feb. 26, 1976. The American Cancer Society has been named as a memorial. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Alton.
Mrs. Frances H. Traunecker
Frances H. Traunecker, 78, of Alton, died at 3:57 am today, October 30, 1986, at St. Joseph's hospital. Mrs Traunecker was employed at Owens-Illinois Glass Company for 9 years, retiring in 1947 as a selector. She was born in Fieldon, the daughter of the late Frank & Nora (Westfall) Kraushaar. On September 10, 1924, in Alton, she married Michael F. Traunecker, who died in 1969. 2 brothers survive, Leo Kraushaar of Godfrey and Frank Kraushaar of Hettick.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-9 pm Friday at Elias-Smith Funeral Home in Godfrey. Services will be conducted there at 10:30 am Saturday by Rev. Lance Bently. Burial will be in Upper Alton cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey, where she was a member.
Mrs. Anna Coleman
Anna Coleman died October 15, 1992 at Jerseyville Care Center in Jerseyville. Born in Fieldon May 19, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Jasper and Frances McCaulley Westfall. Her husband Joseph Coleman preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Eunice Kessler of Oregon and Geneva McClintock of Arizona; two sons, Virgil Griffin of Fieldon and Harold Griffin of Washington; 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jasper Westfall of Alton. Preceding her in death were two daughters, Viola Godar and Norma Jean Griffin; a son Melvin Griffin; two grandchildren; a sister Laura Coleman; and three brothers, Floyd, Lonnie and Edward Westfall. Visitation is from 10 Monday until service time at 1 p.m. at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Grant Jensen will officiate. Burial is in Grimes-Neely Cemetery west of Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to a charity of ones choice.
Charles Wesley Griffin (partial obituary)
Howard Busnell will officiate, and burial will be in the Grimes Cemetery southwest of Jerseyville. Griffin was the son of John and Alice Brooks Griffin and was born near Granite City on July 20, 1873. His death occurred Wednesday morning. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Anna Westfall Griffin; two sons, Harold and Melvin Griffin of Fieldon; three daughters, Miss Emma Griffin, Miss Geneva Griffin, and Mrs. Alfred Godar of Hardin. He is also survived by a half-brother Charles Rouruff of Alton, and one half sister, Mrs. Thomas Proffer. Two grand children also survive him.
Harold Wesley Griffin
October 7, 1924 - June 17, 2002
Harold Wesley Griffin, 77, who lived recently in Coupeville, Washington, and had moved there from Goldbar, Washington, was born in Otterville, Illinois.
Harold is survived by his wife, Alice; a daughter Virginia & (Paul) Ward of Jerseyville, Illinois; a son, Ronald & (Mildred) Griffin of Goldbar; a son, David & (Virginia) Griffin of Sultan; sisters, Eunice Kessler of Portland, Oregon; and Geneva McClintock of Jerseyville; 6 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilma in 1991; by two children Rosemary & Mitchell Griffin; two brothers, Virgil & Melvin Griffin; and two sisters Viola Godar & Norma Jean Griffin.
Virgil Harold Griffin (partial obituary)
Virgil Harold Griffin died at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis. He was retired from the Union Pacific Railroad and was currently employed at Sisters of Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis as a computer software ---. Born in Fieldon he was a son of the late Charles Wesley and Anna Westfall Griffin. Surviving are a son Christopher Griffin of Jerseyville, and two daughters Anna Bailey of --- and Dawn Hillier of Aurora; seven grandchildren; a brother Harold Griffin of ---, and two sisters Eunice Kessler of --- and Geneva McClintock of ---. A brother Melvin Griffin and two sisters Norma Jean Griffin and Viola Godar preceded him in death. Visitation was set for 4 to 7 Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. William Hembrow will celebrate a Mass at 11 Monday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville. Burial is in Grimes-Neely Cemetery west of Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Ruth Josephine Westfall
Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Josephine Westfall of 636 Oakwood Ave., in Alton were conducted bt Reverand Dorcie Hill at the Healing Waters Temple Aug. 7. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery. She passed away at the age of 63 at St. Lukes Hospital in St. Louis on Aug. 5, 1974. She was born March 22, 1911 in Missouri, the daughter of Michael McNish (mother's name unknown).
Survivors include her husband Jasper Westfall; two brothers, Allen McNish and Weltz NcNish of Missouri; two sisters, Mrs. Andrew (Emilie) Andrews of Kansas and Mrs. Maude Winters of Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one sister, a daughter, a son and one granddaughter.
Jasper Westfall
Jasper Westfall died Oct. 19, 1997 at Saint Anthonys Health Center in Alton. Born April 1907 in Fieldon, he was a son of the late Jasper and Frances McCaulley Westfall. He was a self-employed farmer in the Fieldon area until he retired. He married the former Helen Ruckman Bailey on June 23, 1975, in Bethalto. She survives. Also surviving are a stepson and his wife, Jack and Norma Bailey of Bethalto; 13 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Matthew Westfall and Jasper Westfall Jr; two sisters, Laura Coleman and Anna Griffin, and three brothers, Lonnie Westfall, Edward Westfall and Floyd Westfall preceded him in death. Matthew Westfall
Matthew Westfall died unexpectedly September 5, 1988 at his home in Otter Creek Township. Westfall was a Army veteran and a self-employed carpenter. Born June 9, 1932 in Jersey County, he was the son of Jasper Westfall of Alton and the late Ruth McNish Westfall. He married the former Marion Pace March 29, 1952 in Jersey County. She survives. In additon to his wife, also surviving are his father Jasper Westfall and his step-mother Helen Westfall of Alton; two sons, Michael Westfall and Matthew Mark Westfall both of Jerseyville; two daughters, Karen Westfall and Jackie Westfall both of Jerseyville; and 10 grandchildren. Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Visitation will continue at the Otterville Baptist Church from noon Friday until time of services at 2 p.m. The Rev. Joy Settles will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the Otterville Baptist Church where Westfall had been a member.
Mrs. Marion Lucille Westfall
Marion Lucille Westfall died July 6, 1992 at Alton Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. Born on September 7, 1934 in Otter Creek Township, she was the daughter of Mary Lucille Ridenour Pace of Otterville and the late Troy Ladell Pace. On March 29, 1952 in Otterville she married Matthew Westfall. He died September 5, 1988. Surviving in addition to her mother are two daughters, Karen Westfall and Jackie Kay Westfall both of Otterville; two sons, Michael Westfall and Mathew Mark Westfall both of Otterville; 10 grandchildren; a sister Sharon Lee Hagerman of Fosterburg; and three brothers, Troy Pace of Grafton, Albert Pace of Otterville, and Steven Pace of Alton. A daughter, Christy Darlene Westfall and a son Randy Joe Westfall preceded her in death. Visitation is from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services Thursday at Otterville Southern Baptist Church. The Rev. Joy Settles will officiate. Burial is in Noble Cemetery in Otterville. Jasper Allen Westfall
Jasper Allen Westfall, 43, of 225 Mounier, Alton, died Friday, August 31, 1973 at the Wood River Township Hospital. He was employed at Owens Illinois as a painter for 23 years. Mr. Westfall was born July 12, 1930, in Jersey County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Westfall Sr., now of Alton. On August 1, 1949, he married the former Frances Talley. Surviving are his wife, Frances (Talley) Westfall; three sons; Allen, Terry and Harry all of Alton; three daughters, Mrs. William (Jeanne) Merideth, Peggy and Sandy all of Alton; a brother, Mathew Westfall; two grandchildren. Harry Jasper Westfall, 17, of 225 Mounier, Alton, drowned at approximately 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, 1975 at Godfrey Pond. He was a senior at Alton Senior High School. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Frances Crumley of Alton, a brother, Allen of Alton, a twin brother, Terry at home; three sisters, Mrs. William (Jeanne) Merideth of Alton, Misses Peggy and Sandy Westfall, both at home; paternal grandfather, Jasper Westfall Sr. of Alton; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Gertrude Talley of Fieldon; and step-father Bobby Crumley of Alton. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home with the Rev. A.J. Maggos of Alton officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville. Mrs. Peggy Ann (Westfall) Rittenhouse
ALTON – Peggy Ann (Westfall) Rittenhouse, 62, died at 10:43 p.m., Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at Missouri Baptist Medical Center in St. Louis,, MO after a long and courageous battle with her health. Peggy was born on January 10, 1955, one of six children born to the Jasper Allen Westfall Jr. & Frances (Talley) Westfall. She was a lifelong resident of Alton and graduated with the class of 1974 from Alton High School. After High School, she went on to further her education at Lewis & Clark Community College. She married Joseph Allen Rittenhouse on December 1, 1990, and together they were married for 5 years before their time was cut all to short with Joe’s death in January of 1996. Peggy worked as a cook for many years at various locations throughout the Alton area including the VFW Post 1308, prior to its closing, at which time she began working at Fountains IV in Godfrey, where she retired as Head Cook in 2014 after several years of service. In her spare time, Peggy enjoyed sewing and embroidery, reading a good book, planting flowers outside her home and enjoying a good scary movie. It was her family, however, who brought Peggy the most joy in life. Her brothers and sisters, many nieces and nephews, and most especially her mother, provided Peggy with many wonderful memories and blessings throughout her life and her love and compassion for them all is something they will never forget. Surviving are her mother, Frances Westfall Crumley of Alton; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanne & Dennis Lacy of Jerseyville and Sandra & Ahmed Maragha of Plainfield, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Allen & Beth Westfall of Alton and George Terry & Julie Westfall of Godfrey; a step-sister, Linda Zaganelli; 6 nieces; 6 nephews; 4 great-nieces and 4 great-nephews; as well as 1 great-great niece and 2 great-great nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father, Jasper Allen Westfall Jr; a brother, Harry Jasper Westfall; as well as her step-father, Bob Crumley. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Monday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral Services will take place at 10 a.m., Tuesday at the Charity Christian Center in Jerseyville with burial following at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville. Mrs. Helen Goldia Westfall
Helen Goldia Westfall, 95, died at 12:25 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Eldercare Nursing Home in Alton. She was born May 28, 1907, in Alton to Frank and Stella (Gelkerson) Ruckman. She married Charles H. Pilger in 1937 in Alton. He died June 14, 1969. She married Jasper Westfall June 23, 1975, in Bethalto. He died Oct. 19, 1997. She was employed at Walnut Grove Dairy in Alton for several years, did volunteer work at McArthur Senior Center for 25 years and was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto of several senior centers. Her love of fishing and traveling will long be remembered.
Surviving are a son and his wife, Jack and Norma Bailey of Meadowbrook; three grandchildren, Sharon Bailey of Witt, Ill., Aaron Bailey of Worden and Eric Bailey of Alton; three great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Dylan Bailey of Worden and Alax Bailey of Alton; other extended family; and many dear friends. Besides her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a brother, Lemuel Ruckman, and twin sisters, Millie Scribner and Lillie Ruckman.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Elias-Smith Funeral Homes and Crematory in Bethalto, and will continue at 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto. Mrs. Eva M. Haag
The funeral of Mrs. Eva May Haag, 85, of 212 Ferguson, Jersyville was conducted Saturday afternoon at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home by the Rev. Carl J. Cook of Alton. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. She died at 3:30 a.m. Nov. 23, 1978 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Alton. She was born in West Virginia Jan. 10, 1893, a daughter of Jasper and Mary Jane Shannon Westfall. Her husband, Michael T. Haag, died Jan. 20, 1956.
She is survived by a son, Michael Haag, Jerseyville; a daughter, Dorothy Michael, Alton; two half brothers, Floyd Westfall of Medora and Jasper Westfall of Alton; a half sister, Anne Coleman, Jerseyville; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters, and two half brothers, a half sister and four sisters.
Michael Thomas Haag Sr.
Michael Thomas Haag Sr., 65, who had suffered a heart condition for the past 12 years, died at 7:40 p.m. Friday in Alton Memorial Hospital. Mr. Haag was moved to the hospital Sunday. He was retired six years ago from Mississippi Lime & Cement Co., where he had worked as a watchman. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Haag, he was born in Jersey County, May 11, 1890, and came to Alton 30 years ago. He had lived at 622 E. Fifth St., for the past eight years. Mr. Haag is survived by his widow, Mrs. Eva Westfall Haag, whom he was married to Feb. 23, 1916 in Jerseyville; three children, Michael Thomas Jr., Mrs. Dorothy Michael, and Mrs. Winifred Herbstreit of Alton, and four grandchildren. The body is at Staten's Funeral Home, where friends may call after 2 p.m Sunday. The Rev. Warner, of Hartford, will conduct rites in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Jerseyville.
Mrs. Dorothy Stella Michael
Dorothy Stella Michael, 91, formerly of Alton, died at 11:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, 2010, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Jersey County on Oct. 10, 1918, one of three children born to the late Michael and Eva (Westfall) Haag. Dorothy married Lawrence Michael on Dec. 24, 1941, in Alton, and he died July 7, 1980. During World War II, Dorothy was employed at the Western Cartridge, and later worked at Owens-Illinois Glass Manufacturing. After her marriage and birth of her daughter, she stayed at home and cared for her family.
Dorothy and Lawrence were residents of Alton during their married life, and it wasn't until after his death that Dorothy located to Jersey County in 1986. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Gerry and Franklin Kovarik of Grafton; a grandson, David Hartley of Elgin; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Donna Haag of Jerseyville. She was preceded in death by a sister, Winifred Herbstreit. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of funeral services at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. Dennis Hill will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Viola F. Godar
Viola F. Godar, 59, died at 2:05 a.m. Monday Nov. 11, 1985 at Greenwood Manor nursing Home in Jerseyville. She was born in Jersey County, a daughter of Anna (Coleman) Griffin of Jerseyville and the late Wesley Griffin. On April 28, 1942, she married Alfred Godar, who survives.
In addition to her mother and husband, surviving are one son, Dwain of Fieldon; three daughters, Wanda Groppel, Theresa Killion and Sylvia Chandler, all of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Griffin of Washington and Virgil Griffin of Jerseyville; and two sisters. Eunice Kessler of Oregon and Jeneva McClintock of Arizona.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. William Hembrow as celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the church where she was a member.
Alfred Godar
Alfred Godar, 84, died at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis County after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 13, 1923, in Hardin, son of Paul Frederick and Theresa Agnes (Becker) Godar. He was raised in Hardin and married the former Viola Frances Griffin on April 28, 1942, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Alton. Shortly after their marriage, he entered World War II, serving with an elite bomb squad in Europe with the U.S. Air Force. After his honorable discharge, he returned home and began working at the Western in East Alton for a short time before he and his wife purchased a farm near Fieldon. He remained active in farming for many years and retired shortly after the death of his wife on Nov. 11, 1985. During the same time period, he also served as road commissioner for English Township for 20 years.
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dwain and Roberta Godar of Eldred; three daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Ted Groppel, Theresa and Richard Killion, and Sylvia "Sug" and David Chandler, all of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Geraldine Krause of Kane, Elaine Turner of Alton, Donna Droege of St. Charles, Mo., and Melba Tepen of Hardin; as well as his former wife, Dorothy, and her daughter, Juanita. In addition to his wife, Viola, he was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Manuel, Cecil, Romeo and Patrick Godar; and two sisters, Rosalee Beiermann and Alice Baalman. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary recitation at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 3, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, April 4, at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow as celebrant. He will be buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Fieldon with military graveside rites conducted by Jerseyville American Legion Post 492. Timothy D. Godar
Timothy D. Godar, 35, died at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2010, at Belleville Memorial Hospital. He was born July 25, 1974, in Alton, to Dwain Godar and Susan Wadlow Godar Schmidt. He married the former Lana McCart. She died Jan. 11, 2007. He worked at Olin Corp. in East Alton and most recently was a member of Iron Workers Local 392 in East St. Louis.
Surviving are his father and his wife, Roberta Godar, of Eldred; his mother and her husband, Robert Schmidt of Jerseyville; two daughters, Lauren Godar and Payge Godar of Caseyville; a twin sister, Tracy Tonsor of Jerseyville; a brother and his wife, Doug and Amy Godar of Jerseyville; two stepsisters and a spouse, Lisa and Tom Green of Otterville and Pam Kanallakan of St. Louis; three nieces, Emily, Samantha and Paytne Godar; and a nephew, Jackson Tonsor. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Irene Wadlow and Alfred and Viola Godar. Visitation, with a 3:45 p.m. rosary service, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2, at Alexander & Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 3. Miss Rosemary Griffin
The funeral of Rosemary Griffin, 17, daughter of Harold and Wilma (Talley) Griffin of R. R. 1, Fieldon was held Tuesday at Gubser Funeral Home with the Rev. Joy Settles officiating. Burial was in Grimes-Neely Cemetery.
She died at 7:30 p.m. July 4, 1980 at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis after an extended illness. She was born June 30, 1963 in Jersyville and was a student at Jersey Community High School.
Her survivors are her parents; two brothers, Ronald and David Griffin of Fieldon; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Ward of Jerseyville; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Coleman and Mrs. Gertrude Talley of Jerseyville. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was named as a memorial.
Donald L. Westfall
Services for Donald Leon Westfall, 53, of R.R. 4, Jerseyville were held Thursday afternoon at Jacoby Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Woodrum officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
He died at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 14, 1982 at Jersey Community Hospital. His death was unexpected. An accountant for Peavey, he was born May 14, 1929 in Jersey County, a son of Lonnie and Frances (Thomas) Westfall. He was a member of the Moose Lodge.
His survivors are his wife, the former Deloris Talley whom he married May 5, 1951 in madison County; mother, Frances E. Westfall of Tampa, Fla; a daughter, Donna Westfall of Jerseyville; brothers, Lonnie and Francis Westfall of Tampa, Fla.; sisters, Viola Dearing and Lily Cail of Tampa, Fla.; Geradine Hedrick, Springfield and Goldie Feyerabend, Jerseyville.
Deloris B. Stone
Deloris B. Stone, 70, died at 1:12 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton. Born Sept. 30, 1931, in Greene County, she was a daughter of the late George L. and Gertrude E. (Parker) Talley. She was self-employed as an Avon representative and was a member of the Ladies of the Moose. She married Donald L. Westfall in 1951. He died in 1982. She married Leon Stone in 1985 in Jerseyville. He survives.
Also surviving are a son, Dewight L. Westfall Sr.; a daughter, Donna J. Westfall; a grandson, Dewight L. Westfall Jr.; four sisters, Lola (Talley) Dunham of Jerseyville, Ilene (Talley) Moore of Granite City, Francis (Talley) Crumley of Alton and Beatrice (Talley) Ebker of Jerseyville; and two brothers, George L. Talley Sr. of Jerseyville and Charles E. Talley of Carrolton. She was preceded in death by four sisters, Marvel (Talley) Brooks, Armeda (Talley) Dunham, Vivian (Talley) Akers and Wilma (Talley) Griffin.

Funeral Mass for Mrs. Helen K. Simpson, 49, of R.R. 3, Jerseyville was celebrated Monday morning, Feb. 24, at St. Francis Xavier Church with Father R.T. Shea, celebrant. She died at 5:45 a.m. on Feb. 22, 1974 at Jersey Community Hospital after an extended illness. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery. She was born Oct. 23, 1925 in Jersey County, a daughter of William and Freda Kraushaar Hewitt. Mrs. Simpson was a nurse's aide. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary of Jerseyville.
Her survivors include her husband E. J. Simpson; four sons, James, Alan, Rick and Robert Wahl of Jerseyville; a daughter, Mrs. Louis (Pam) Blackorby of Franklin; and a brother, William Hewitt of Troy. Visitation was held at Jacoby Funeral Home where the Rosary was recited at 8 p.m. Sunday evening, Feb. 23.
James William Wahl Sr.
James William Wahl Sr., 68, of rural Pearl died Friday, Sept. 14, 1990 at his residence.
Born March 28, 1922 at Jerseyville, he was the son of the late James Francis and Nora (Murphy) Wahl. He married Lola Lowe July 23, 1973 at Jerseyville and she survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Pam Blackorby of Franklin; four sons, Jim, Alan and Rick of Jerseyville and Bob of Highland; two stepchildren, Marvin Uphold of Milton and Joyce Herren of Wood River, and 17 grandchildren.
A mechanic, Mr. Wahl had worked at McDonnell-Douglas for 31 years, retiring in 1980. He was a World War II Army veteran. A funeral mass was held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church in Jerseyville with Father Henry Schmidt oficiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with the Jerseyville American Legion participating. Memorials may be given to St. Francis Xavier or Holy Ghost Schools.
James W. “Jim” Wahl, Jr.
James W. “Jim” Wahl, Jr., 67, of Franklin formerly of rural Jerseyville passed away Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Heritage Hospice in Springfield. He was born April 16, 1950 in Alton, the son of James W. and Helen K. Hewitt Wahl, Sr. Jim is survived by one son, Ty (Victoria) Johnson of Jerseyville; two grandsons; his former wife, Sue Johnson Taylor; one sister; Pamela Blackorby of Franklin; three brothers, Alan (Paula) Wahl of Brighton, Rick (Lisa) Wahl of Jerseyville, and Bob (Linda) Wahl of Highland; a beloved best friend, Ann Turner of Jacksonville; along with several nieces and nephews. Jim was an Army Veteran serving from 1969 – 1971 in Korea. He worked as a welder for many years and later as a trucker. He enjoyed playing guitar and Harley Davidson motorcycles. More than anything he loved his friends and family. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield. Lola I. Wahl, 66, pf Pittsfield died Monday, June 18, 2001, at the Pittsfield Healthcare Center. Born Oct. 30, 1034 in Rosedale. She was the daughter of Charles Jasper and Cecelia Irene (Cope) Lowe. She married James Wahl Sr.: He preceded her in death. Mrs. Wahl owned and was a waitress at at a bakery/restaurant. She cared for injured wildlife for the Illinois Department of Conservation and released them back into the wild. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Pittsfield.
Survivors include a son, Gene Uphold of Pittsfield, a daughter, Joyce Herron of Mitchell; two brothers, Charles Lowe of Meadowbrook and Milton Lowe of Nutwood; five grandchildren, and three grea-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sisters, a brother, and a daughter-in-law, Linda Uphold. Memorial services were held Friday at 1 p.m. at the Assembly of God Church in Pittsfield with Pastor Darrell Bucher officiating. Carl J. Feyerabend
Carl J. Feyerabend, 86, of Jerseyville, died April 23, 1984 at Jersey Community hospital. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Robert Broeder officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. A self employed carpenter, Mr. Feyerabend was born January 13, 1898 in Jersey County, son of the late Henry & Mary (Elfgen) Feyerabend. He was a WWII veteran of the army.

Mrs. Goldie Feyerabend
Goldie Helen Feyerabend, 73, died at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1992, at her residence following a lengthy illness. She was born in Alton on Dec. 17, 1919, a daughter of the late Lonnie and Martha (Thomas) Westfall. Her husband, Carl Feyerabend, died April 23, 1984.
Surviving are a sister, Lillie Hetzel of Tampa, Fla.; a half sister, Esther Chapman of Benld; and a half brother, Lonnie Westfall of Ocala, Fla. Three half brothers, Phillip, Donald and Paul Westfall, preceded her in death. There will be no visitation. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Gubser Funeral Home of Jerseyville was in charge of arrangements.
Earl H. Gibson
Earl H. Gibson of 109 Timber Road, Denver, Iowa, formerly of Shell Rock and most recently of Ennis, Montana, died Thursday morning, June 24, 1993 at Allen Memorial Hospital from congestive heart failure. Earl was born on December 23, 1921, in East St. Louis, Illinois, the son of Earl H. and Agnes E. (Martin) Gibson Sr. Earl attended grade school in Washington Park, Illinois and also Ingraham, Illinois. Earl then moved to Cristobal, Panama Canal Zone where he graduated from hig school in 1942. Earl then worked for the Civil Service n Panama, and also attended Bomb Sight School before entering the U.S. Air Force on October 3, 1945. Earl was discharged on December 1, 1946, and on June 13, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mary A. Horn at the Panama Canal Zone. The couple made their home in Panama and Earl worked at the airbase as an airplane instrument mechanic. In 1953 the couple move to Shell Rock, Iowa, where Earl became engaged in farming as a cattle feeder. Earl retired from farming in 1987, and the couple moved to Ennis, Montana. In September of 1992, the couple moved to Denver, Iowa, and made their home at 109 Timber Road. Earl was a member of the Bremer County Extension Council in the 1960's, and enjoyed hunting, but most of all he loved the mountains of Montana.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Denver, his nine children, Mona Rahlf of Waterloo, Stuart Gibson of Woodstock, Georgia, Laura Miller of Fairfield, Iowa, Duane (Buck) Gibson of Shell Rock, Iowa, Wylene Heidorn of Rochester, Minnesota, Peggy Jacobs of Jefferson, Iowa, Karen Johnson of Bozeman, Montana, Kent Gibson of Denver, Iowa, and Brad Gibson of Charles City, Iowa, twenty seven grandchildren, one brother, Merril D. Gibson of Garber, Iowa, and one sister, Jeanette Wattles of Louisville, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, a half brother, James Ewing, and two sisters, Mona A. Gibson and Clara G. Gibson.
Services held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Waterloo, Iowa June 28, 1993 at 10:30 a.m., the clergy officiating, Rev. James Carstensen and Rev. Gregory Heidorn, the organist Joann Wiltfang, and the soloist Bill Quibell. Military Graveside Rites by Avery-Slight American Legion Post #393 of Shell Rock, Iowa. The Casket Bearers were Brad C. Gibson, Duane E. Gibson, Kent B. Gibson, Stuart V. Gibson, Ray C. Johnson, and Albert F. Rahlf. Final resting place Mt. Vernon Township Cemetery Rural Waterloo, Iowa.
Mrs. Mary A. Gibson
Mary Alice Gibson, 79, of Denver, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2008 at Allen Hospital, Waterloo. She was born March 31, 1929, in East St. Louis, Ill., daughter of John P. and Elizabeth Kraushaar Horn. She married Earl Gibson on June 13, 1947. He died in June 1993. Mrs. Gibson and her husband farmed near Shell Rock from 1953 until retiring in 1985.
Survived by: five daughters, Mona (Albert) Rahlf of Waterloo, Wylene (Gregory) Heidorn of Rochester, Minn., Laura (Larry) Miller of Fairfield, Peggy (Allen) Jacobs of Jefferson and sons, Stuart (Tari) of Woodstock, Ga., Duane (Julie) of Shell Rock, Kent (Brenda) of Denver and and Brad (Becky) of Charles City; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services: 3 p.m. Sunday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with burial in Mount Vernon Township Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Mrs. Carol J. Essen
Carol J. Essen, 53, died at 11:01 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at her home. Born Aug. 9, 1948, in Carrollton, she was a daughter of Eunice Marie (Griffin) Kessler of Portland, Ore., and the late Lewis George Kessler. She married Roland "Ed" Essen March 13, 1970, in St. Charles, Mo. He survives.
In addition to her husband and mother, surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Jeanette Essen of Portland and Cindy K. and Ken Tripp of Portland; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Amanda Essen of Carrollton; and five grandsons, Nick, Mark, Josh, Joe and Jacob.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Tri-County Vietnam Veterans Association. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where the Rev. Delbert Essen will officiate at services at 10 a.m. Monday. Burial will follow in the Grimes-Neely Cemetery, west of Jerseyville. Mrs. Geneva Ruth McClintock
Geneva Ruth McClintock, 69, died at 2:17 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006, at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis. Born March 23, 1937, in Fieldon, she was the daughter of Wesley Charles Griffin and Anna (Westfall) Griffin Coleman. She was a member of the Holy Ghost Church in Jerseyville.
Survivors include one son, John McClintock Sr. of Jerseyville; four grandchildren, John McClintock Jr. of Moline, Ill., and Erikia, Lance and Alex McClintock, all of Jerseyville; two great-grandchildren, Dylan Riley and Chloe McClintock; and one sister, Eunice Fugett of Portland, Ore.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Norma Jean Griffin and Viola Godar; and three brothers, Virgil, Melvin and Harold Griffin. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Saturday at Alexander and Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The Rev. William Hembrow will officiate. Burial will be at Grimes-Neely Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
Mrs. Bertha E. Westfall
Bertha E. Westfall, 90, died at 7:58 a.m. Monday, July 28, 2008, at Heritage Manor in Gillespie. She was born July 25, 1918, in Eldred to Julius and Lula (Cornelius) Wanick. Her marriage to Floyd N. Westfall took place June 15, 1935, in Jerseyville. She was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Church in Gillespie and a volunteer at the Gillespie Caring Center.
Survivors include seven grandchildren, Dan Brown, Randy Brown, Michael Westfall, Jamie Westfall, Jason Westfall, Brenda, and Donna Palicka; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Lyle Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one son, Floyd Westfall Jr.; and one daughter, Joann Brown. Visitation will be from 10 until time of services at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Kravanya Funeral Home in Gillespie. Monsignor Larry Auda will officiate. Burial will be at Grimes Cemetery in Jerseyville.

Floyd Westfall died June 3, 1991 at Gillespie. He retired as a blacksmith from Laclede Steel of Alton. Born on April 26, 1914 in Fieldon, he was a son of the late Jasper and Frances McCaulley Westfall. On June 15, 1935 in Jerseyville, he married the former Bertha Wanick, who survives. Joann Brown died June 1, 1997 at St. Francis Hospital. A daughter of Bertha Wanick Westfall of Gillespie and the late Floyd Westfall, she was born May 18, 1941 in Jersey County. She married Lyle Brown in Gillespie. He survives. In addition to her husband and mother, surviving are two sons, Dan and Diane Brown and Randy and Lisa Brown all of Gillespie; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, and a brother Floyd Westfall. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kravanya Funeral Home in Gillespie where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday by Father Chuck. Burial will be in Gillespie City Cemetery. Clarence “Lyle” Brown, 73, of Dorchester, IL, died at Friendship Home in Carlinville, IL on Monday, June 1, 2015, at 11:30 p.m. He was born on July 30, 1941, in Eagerville, IL to Lavone Brown and Calista (Smith) Brown. He married Barbara Joann (Westphal) Brown on November 9, 1959, in St Louis, MO. She preceded him in death on June 1, 1997. He then married Beulah (Patrick) Clark Brown on June 20, 1998, in Missouri. He was a retired auto mechanic teacher for Unit School District 7 and was a former Unit School District 7 bus driver and former owner of Gillespie Implement. He was a member of Easy Riders Horse Club and United Methodist Church of Dorchester. He is survived by his spouse, Beulah Brown of Dorchester, IL; sons and daughters in laws, Dan and Diane Brown of Gillespie, IL, Randy and Lisa Brown of Gillespie, IL; step children, Rosalie (Ray) Thompson of Erie, IL, Carol (Charles) Beard of Nilwood, IL, Jeffrey Clark of Erie, IL; grandchildren, Dustin (Dana) Brown of Ruskin, FL, Tyler (Leslie) Brown of Gillespie, IL, Denay Brown of Gillespie, IL, Whitney Brown of Gillespie, IL; 8 step grandchildren; great-grandchildren, Keegan Brown, Hilary Brown; 13 step great grandchildren; brothers, Don Brown of Staunton, IL, Dave Brown of Gillespie, IL, Kenny Brown of Gillespie, IL and sister, Katie Campbell of Staunton, IL. Paul V. Ward
Paul V. Ward, 69, died at 8:52 p.m. Friday, April 16, 2010, at St. John's Mercy Health Care in St. Louis. He was born March 3, 1941, in Jerseyville, the son of Arthur and Agnes (Franz) Ward, now deceased. He married Virginia Griffin May 28, 1960, in Pittsfield, Ill. She survives. He retired in 1998 after 26 years as owner and operator of Wards Meat Processing in Jerseyville. He enjoyed fishing and boating and spending time with his family. He was a member of Jerseyville Masonic Lodge No. 394 and past member of Jerseyville Moose Lodge No. 695, Jerseyville Eagles Lodge No. 2747 and Jerseyville Elks Lodge No. 594.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Martin, and Adrienne Ward of Belleville; daughters, Bonnie and Mark Helfer of Jerseyville and Anna and R. Calvin Keaton of St. Louis; grandchildren, Jacinda and Chad Custer, Peggy and Aaron West, Betsy and Paul Garrison, Kassandra Pickel, Noah Keaton and Owen Keaton; five great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Ward of Jerseyville, David and Pat Ward of Kingston Mines, Ill., and Hollis Ward of Dow. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Donald, Robert and Dale Ward. Geraldine Hederick, 67, of Springfield died at 6:55 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2010, at her residence. She was born December 27, 1942, in Jerseyville, IL, the daughter of Lon & Frances Thomas Westfall. She married Gerald Hederick on December 1, 1962, and he preceded her in death on July 6, 1999. She also was preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers; and a nephew. She is survived by 1 sister, Viola Dearing; 1 brother, Francis Westfall; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Geraldine was a homemaker. Dearing, Viola Mae, 69 of Tampa, Fl passed away on February 14, 2011 peacefully with her family surrounding her. Lonny Westfall, a retired farmer of Fieldon died Sunday September 20, 1970 at Jersey Community Hospital. He was born in Jersey County on April 13, 1895, a son of the late Jasper and Frances McCaulley Westfall. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Harold Call of Tampa, Florida and Mrs. Carl Feyerabend of Jerseyville; two sons, Lonnie Westfall of Tampa and Donald Westfall of Fieldon; three brothers, Ed Westfall and Jasper Westfall of Fieldon and Floyd Westfall of Medora; two sisters, Mrs. William Pitts of Jerseyville and Mrs. Joseph Coleman of Alton; one half-sister, Eva Haag of Alton; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral services at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. The funeral services will be officiated by the Rev. Antone Maggos of Alton. Frances Ellen Westfall died May 6, 1990 at Carlinville Area Hospital. Born May 26, 1904 in Jerseyville, she was the daughter of the late Marshall and Lena Schmidt Thomas. Surviving are two sons, Lonny Westfall of Tampa, Florida and Francis Westfall of Zephyr Hills, Florida; two daughters, Viola Dearing of Land 0 Lakes, Florida and Geraldine Hederick of Springfield; two step-daughters, Lilly Hetzel of Florida and Goldie Feyerabend of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were three sons, Donald, Paul and Phillip Westfall; a brother, Herbert Thomas and two sisters, Martha Sprowell and Wilma Schaaf. Visitation is from 11 a.m. Wednesday until service time at 2 p.m. at the Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

Eunice Marie Fugitt (Aug. 8, 1932 - July 22, 2015) - Eunice Marie Fugitt died on July 22 at home in Oregon City. She was laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. She is survived by: husband, Nolan; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Louis A. Blackorby, Jr.
Louis A. Blackorby, Jr., 72, of Franklin, passed away, Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville. He was born, July 14, 1943, in Rosedale, the son of Louis and Virginia Hoyt Blackorby. He married Pamela Wahl, November 4, 1967, in Jerseyville, and she survives. He is also survived by two daughters, Laura (Douglas) Knight of Springfield and Kate (Matthew) Bilyeu of St. Louis; two sons, Timothy (Pamela) Blackorby of Springfield and Gregory (Amanda) Blackorby of Alexander; eight grandchildren, Owen Blackorby, Hannah Blackorby, Olivia Knight, Andrew Knight, Natalie Knight, Camille Knight, Avery Blackorby and Cora Bilyeu; four sisters, Betty (Leroy) Wilderman of Brighton, Mary (Duane) Dittrick of Salisbury, Mo., Nancy (Mike) Zipprich of Elsah and Cathy (Matt) Williams of Alton; three brothers, Robert (Mary) Blackorby of Knoxville, TN, Denny (Mick) Blackorby of Dow and Brian (Jennifer) Blackorby of Jerseyville; along with several aunts and uncles including, Norman (Ruth Ann) Hoyt and Marilyn Scott. Louis was preceded in death by his parents and his sister-in-law, Debbie Blackorby. Louis served in the United States Air Force and later became an Illinois State Police Officer (Executive Protection), retiring in 1993. He went on to work for Illinois State Police Training and Standards Board and was active in the Fraternal Order of Police. He loved coaching the Franklin Little League for many years. He was on the Finance Committee for the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, a member of the American Legion post 1089. He loved his grandchildren and spending time with them, especially on family vacations. He enjoyed visiting with friends over coffee at the Franklin FS Liars Club, and watching Illini basketball. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Franklin, with burial at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Franklin. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Williamson Funeral Home in Jacksonville. A prayer service will be conducted at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
