Lucinda Lee "Lucy" Bullard Cope was born Apr. 10, 1817 in Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky, and died Oct. 9, 1917 in Cameron, Clinton County, Missouri. She was the daughter of John Joseph Bullard and Nancy Ann Rogers. She married George Cope, 17 Apr 1836, Greene County, Illinois. The first Cope family in Jersey County, Illinois arrived by covered wagon and settled west of Jerseyville, say some members of the Cope family. They were George and Lucinda Cope who pre-empted 120 acres of land 4 1/2 miles southwest of Jerseyville. Lucinda lived in this home until at 92 could no longer live alone. They had 11 children. Lucinda told of how her father often killed a bear. It was then slaughtered and prepared for eating and storing. She told of how the entrails were dried and then scraped and hung on the fence to dry. After they dried the girls split them, by then they were very shiny, so the girls wore them as ribbons. The only thing she said "they made her hair greasy." Lucinda also told of how her Mother would hide the children in the chimney because of the Indians (in NC). They were afraid of being killed or scalped. Lucinda was a large woman being 5' 11" tall. She always wore long dresses that had large pockets in which to carry her money and her pipe. Ada Mourning MYERS mother, Hattie Mackelden MOURNING, said this always fascinated her when her grandmother pulled out the pipe. Lucinda could climb easily in and out of a wagon at the age of 99. She lived to be 100 years, 5 months and 29 days old.

When 17 she married George Cope of North Carolina and they homesteaded a farm of 120 acres four and one-half miles southwest of Jerseyville in Otter Creek township. Mr. Cope died 38 years ago. She lived on the farm 75 years. Seven years ago she left the farm to visit her daughter, Mrs. Dan Bray, and from there to Adair, Oklahoma, where she spent two years with another daughter, Mrs. Jane Sandidge, before moving to Missouri. Besides two daughters, Mrs. Bray and Sandridge, Mrs. Cope has six other living children as follows: Milton Cope, with whom she lives, Joseph Cope of Bates Co., Missouri, Mrs. Emaline Decker, Mrs. Wm. They lived six months in a house with an earth floor, and cooked in an open fire place. She spun the cloth for clothing for her family. (4aaa) Frank Sinclair and Louise (Baum) Sinclair's daughter Frances Sinclair died Nov. 25, 1930 at age 18. Frances Sinclair came to her death by being hit by an automobile driven by a hit and run driver whose name was unknown at the time, at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday evening, Nov. 25, 1930.

(Note: Here is a newspaper article from Dec. 5, 1930 regarding an inquest about Frances Sinclair's death -- Jersey Coroner Closes Inquest In Sinclair Death - No further clues leading to the identity of the driver which struck Frances Sinclair. 18 year old high school girl, causing her death. Coroner B. M. Brewster Wednesday closed the inquest into the cause of the death which had been held open pending further developments. The jury, which had been previously impanelled, returned its verdict as follows: "Frances Sinclair came to her death by being hit by an automobile driven by a hit and run driver whose name is unknown, at 9:30 o'clock Tuesday evening, Nov. 25. A fracture of the skull sustained by tho victim in the accident resulted in her death." Miss Sinclair, who was a junior at Jersey Township School, was found fatally injured near the high school building by Deputy Sheriff Rick Shafer, night watchman at the school. She had crossed the street during the snowstorm and evidently had not seen the approaching car, which witnesses say was traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver of tha machine did not stop, and no clue to his identity could be found.)

(Note: Another newspaper article regarding the indictment of the hit and run driver who killed Frances Sinclair -- THURSDAY. OCTOBER 1, 1931, ALTON, IL - Police Chief Lifts Veil in Girl's Death - Youth Admits He Drove Car That Killed Frances Sinclair, Snow Blinded Him Hit "Something'; Feared To Tell When He Learned What It Was - Jury informed of Explanation After Three Days of Questioning JERSEYVILLE, Oct. 1. — Following an indictment for manslaughter returned against him by the grand Jury of Jersey county, George Brockholdt. 20. of Grafton, Tuesday evening confessed he was driver of the car which ran down Frances Sinclair, 18, high school girl, on Nov. 25, 1930, and inflicted the wound which resulted in her death, it was made public Wednesday. The tragedy occurred on North State street nearly a year ago as Miss Sinclair was crossing the road from the home of Dr. and Mrs. A. M. Wiles, where she had practiced with an orchestra of high school students, to the high school building where she was to wait for her brother. The death car disappeared into the night and the body of the girl was found near the curb by Nick Shafer, night watchman at the high school, a short time later. The girl died at 10:12 o'clock that evening at the Wiles' home, where she was taken following the accident, and for months no clue was found to indicate the identity of the driver of the car, who had struck down the girl and then fled. A few days after the accident it is understood that Brockholdt told a girl friend he was the driver of a car which had struck and fatally injured a young girl in Jerseyville on the night of Nov. 25. After a few weeks this Information leaked out and reached local officials. For months State Patrolman T. L. Conklln. Sheriff McDow, Justice H. E, Whltley, and Officer Andrews have been busy collecting clues in the case with the result that three witnesses were brought before the grand jury in the September term for questioning. The testimony of these witnesses was strong enough for an indictment for manslaughter to be returned against Brockholdt. The man was taken into custody and placed in the county jail when unable to furnish bond, which was placed at $5000 by Judge Burton. His trial is scheduled for Monday Oct. 36, when Judge Burton will return to Jerseyville to reconvene the present term of circuit court. At first Brockholdt steadfastly denied any conection with the crime, but finally confessed when questioned by State's Attorney Chappell and Sheriff McDow. According to his story, Brockholdt was living in Grafton and had gone to his grandfather's home several miles north of Jerseyvllle to get his brother, Charles, on the night of the accident. After the two had started home, he says they decided they would be unable to reach Grafton on account of the severe snowstorm, and turned around to return to their grandfather's place. The youth stated that while he was driving north on State street about 30 miles an hour, he felt a bump indicating that he had struck someone, but he became so frightened that he fled from the scene without making an investigation. He alleged they did not learn of the fatal accident until they read an account of it in the newspapers and that then he was afraid to confess. The grand jury was in session two days and returned 2 other indictments in addition to the one against Brockholdt.)

(Note: Herbert Cope was a commercial fisherman in the Alton, IL area, and here is an article about him and Dudge Collins catching a bull shark in their fish traps near Alton in 1937 ---- The Atlas of North American Freshwater Fishes describes the bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) as an aggressive shark that reaches 10 feet in length and has been known to attack man. Its range extends as far up the Mississippi River as Alton, Illinois. According to the Illinois Department of Conservation, two commercial fishermen from Alton, Herbert Cope and Dudge Collins, caught a bull shark in 1937. They found something troubling their wood and mesh traps late that summer. Concluding that it was a fish, they built a strong wire trap and baited it with chicken guts. The next morning, they caught a 5-foot 84-pound shark, which they displayed in the Calhoun Fish Market where it attracted crowds for days. Although some folks suspected a hoax, the catch was considered authentic. Biologists later concluded from photos that it was a bull shark. Recently, Clint Smith of Alton supplied an old photo of the catch, with the present-day ADM flourmill in the background. Bull sharks can live a long time in freshwater. In 1972, one was caught 2,500 miles up the Amazon. The journey from New Orleans to Alton is about 1,750 miles. Dams now prevent sharks from entering Illinois.)
