Johannes Westfall

My gr. gr. gr. gr. gr. gr. grandfather was Johannes Juriaen Westfall born in 1660 in Foxhall Manor, Ulster City, New York. He died about 1725 in Minisink, Orange County, New York. He was the son of Juriaen and Maritje (Hansen Van Nordstrand) Westfall, the first of our Westfall family to immigrate to America. He married Marritje Jacobsen Kool (or Cool) January 28, 1682 or 1683 in Kingston, New York. She was baptized 7 Mar 1666 in Kingston, Ulster, New York. She had three older brothers, Symen, Barent (who died young), and Barent, and another brother, Arent, who was probably her twin. She was the daughter of Jacob Barenson and Marritje (Simons) Kool.

In 1696 Johannes and 18 others including his brothers Symen, Nicholas, and his widowed sister Rymerick Quick bought land from the Minsi Indians along the Delaware River near the New York/New Jersey line. The land lies principally in Deerpark Township, Orange County, New York. Johannes was among those who obtained a deed from a group of Native Americans for land in the Minisink area. This land is believed to be located in between the present-day cities of Westbrookville and Port Jervis, Orange County, New York. The peaceful Minsi Indians were one of the three tribes of the Lenni Lenape people. About 1699 Johannes and his family moved to what was called the Minisink settlement. They were among the first white people to live in the area. Johannes oldest son Jurian and his friend Jacob Kuykendall hunted and trapped with the Minsi Indians as youths, and later traded with them. Jurian married Jacob's sister Styntie Kuykendall and Jacob married Jurian's sister Sara westfall. They raised their families and farmed there in the Minisink Valley along the Delaware River at peace with the Indians for many years. Jurian had the first apple orchard in the area, and Jacob established the first trading post. Three of Jurian's sisters married into the Dutch Kuykendall family.

Johannes and Marretje (Kool) Westfall had 13 children-Jurian George Westfall, Maretje Maria Westfall, Rebecca Westfall, Janneetje Westfall, Sara Westfall, Jacob Westfall, Abel John Westfall, Nicholas Westfall, Klaartjen Westfall, Rymerick Westfall, Helena Westfall, Rachel Westfall, and John W. Westfall.

(1) Johannes and Marritje (Kool) Westfall's son Jurian George Westfall was born in 1684 Kingston, New York. He died in 1753 in Pennsylvania. He married first Styntje Christina Kuykendall. His 2nd wife was Marytjen Maria Koddebek.

------------------

STYNTIE or CHRISTINA, the first child, a daughter of Luur Jacobsen Van Kuykendaal and wife Grietje Aertze Tack, grew up with her parents about fifteen miles from Kingston, New York. She married Jurian Westfall, about 1710; the baptism of their first Child took place in 1711. Jurian and his wife, Christina Van Kuykendaal, lived nearly eleven miles below the present site of Port Jervis, on the Delaware river, in Sussex County, N. J., adjacent to what was then called the "Big Minisink Island." Here Jacob Van Kuykendall and his brother-in-law, Jurian Westfall, lived on part of a tract of land they had bought jointly from Thomas Stevenson, of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, containing 500 acres. They sold a part of this tract to a man named Johannes Westbrook, and divided the remainder between them. The plat of the old original village of Minisink, made April 7, 1725, shows the names of both Jacob Kuykendall and Jurian Westfall and also that of Jacob's brother, Mattheus. Just what time they might have moved on to this place is not known, but it may have been any time between 1714 and 1725, but was probably nearer the first named date. The marriage of Jurian Westfall and Styntie Kuykendall was the first intermarriage of the two families. By this marriage Christina had three children, viz: Johannes, baptized June 24,1711: Jacobus, baptized February 8, 1713; Jacob, baptized June 8, 1715. Christina must have died soon after the birth of this child Jacob, for her husband, Jurian Westfall, married the second time to Marytje Koddebeck, August 20, 1717. Both Cuddebacks and Westfalls intermarried with Kuykendalls afterwards many times From: Kuykendall, George Benson "History of The Kuykendall Family Since Its Settlement in Dutch New York in 1646 With Genealogy, etc" (Portland, OR, 1919)

(1aaaaaaaa) George Davis McClanahan and Lucille (Westfall) McClanahan's daughter Beverly Jo McClanahan Bowerman's obituary - Our beautiful loving Mom, Wife, Sister, Aunt, Cousin, Grandma and Friend, Beverly Slade Bowerman, was called home on October 31, 2016, at the age of 79. Beverly began her life in Del Norte Colorado on April 28, 1937 to the parents of George and Lucile McClanahan. She was the oldest of 5 children. She attended all of her schooling in Del Norte Colorado. At the age of 13 she came across her first trial in life, non-paralytic Polio. She fought her way through with physical therapy, and grew into a beautiful strong young woman. Her favorite pass time from an early age was dancing. Many fond memories in her life were created with dance. One of her favorite things to do with her siblings was to teach them how to dance, she taught them the Jitterbug, the Charleston and the Boogie Woogie. Her brother George Wayne picked up on dancing so well, Beverly nick named him Boogie. Beverly left Del Norte at the age 17 before finishing High School to work in Durango Colorado as a telephone operator. Not long after moving she meet Monte Slade at a dance, they married and had 4 children. She was bound and determined to finish her schooling. While raising her new babies she worked very hard and accomplished her goal by receiving her certificate and GED. This was a very important achievement for her and made sure she let everyone know that she had finished her schooling. Beverly's greatest legacy was her family. She found pride is all she did, especially when it came to taking care of her family. She was an excellent cook, her son Doug remembers her saying "Eat those vegetables, they are so good for you." to him they were nasty vegetables. Mom was an excellent seamstress, she made her two daughters beautiful Easter dresses every year. She enjoyed the art of embroidery and made many pillow cases, as well as, dish towels for her loved ones. Her son Bryant would put rubber snakes in her bed, put aka seltzer in his mouth and pretend he was having a seizer. It’s surprising he didn’t give mom a heart attack! Beverly was active in the LDS church. After her divorce she meet LD Bowerman, whom she married and was later sealed in the Provo LDS Temple. LD's job allowed them to traveled all over the United States. Erin Henriod, their granddaughter was one of their travel companions. She and LD had a immense love for all animals, Beverly (Kitty Cat Grandma) was loved and cherished by all of 17 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren she had. Beverly is survived by her siblings: Phyllis Bennett, Charles (Leota) McClanahan, Alice (Ken) Black and Georege Wayne McClanahan. She is preceded in death by her daughter Donsa Lewis, daughter in-law Dena Slade, grandsons Zachary Lewis and Travis Earl. Funeral services will be held on November 9, 2016 at 12:00 pm at the LDS Chapel located at; 2530 West 200 South in Provo, Utah. ln lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been set up in the name of Beverly Bowerman at Mountain America Credit Union.

With his family by his side. George was born July 8, 1952 in Del Norte Colorado to George Davis and Lucille Westfall McClanahan. He received his nickname “Boogie” lovingly from his older sisters at a young age while teaching him to dance to the “Boogie Woogie.” “Boogie” at a very young age loved painting, knitting, woodworking, crafts and developed a real passion for flowers and gardening, anything that would keep his hands busy. During his teenage years he began working as a cook, and developed a real talent and passion for the food service business. He would also work for Homestate Mines in Creede, Co., and Nelsons Meats in Monte Vista, Co. In 1970 he met and married Ruth Christensen of Monte Vista, Co. and would be blessed with three boys during that marriage. After high school they were given the opportunity to manage and eventually purchase the “Speedy Burger” in Del Norte. This led to his career in the food service business and eventually changing the name to “Boogies Restaurant” in 1990. He loved cooking for the crowds of people, refining the recipes and baking some of the best pies and cinnamon rolls in the valley. Another of his great accomplishments during this time, along with his family was the restoration of the Wiley Mansion on Cherry Street in Del Norte. George was active in community, serving on the Tourism Board, Chamber of Commerce and the Del Norte Tree Board. Over the years he generously donated to several local organizations and helped many people less fortunate than he. Samuel Westfall's obituary - From Geneva Gazette 3 March 1871 - Death of Samuel Westfall, Esq. of Phelps - Again we are admonished how sudden is the approach of the King of Terrors. Another citizen has been called to his final resting place. Friends have gathered again to bid adieu to one of their number. Solemn, impressive, yet oh, how sure is death! On Tuesday morning the 21st inst., Mr. Westfall arose, performed the usual work about the premises as he had been accustomed to do, and went out to his woodhouse to saw wood. He cut a few sticks and split the same, and commenced piling them, when suddenly he was noticed by his little grandchild who was present to fall over backwards. The child immediately ran into the house and told his grandmother and aunt that "his grandpa had fallen over backwards and could not get up." They proceeded at once to the woodhouse and found him lying on the ground. They raised him up but he breathed but a few times and was dead. Mr. Westfall had not enjoyed good health for a number of years, yet his death at the time was unlooked for. He lived to see a large family of children grow to man and womanhood, and but a few weeks since to see one of his daughters buried. He was a farmer by occupation, having inherited a portion of his father's estate, which, when a young man he entered upon, and resided till the time of his death. His father was summoned to the boundary line between this state and Canada as a militiaman in 1812, and in the skirmish at Kingston, Canada, lost his life. Mr. Westfall was thoroughly imbued with Democratic principles, as was his father before him; and but few men in his position and standing were more intelligent, more ready to defend the faith that was in him. As a neighbor he was respected, as a parent much revered, as a citizen and one of the pioneers of the town highly honored. His wife and several children survive him. His funeral was attended from his late residence on Friday, the 24th inst., by a large concourse of citizens and friends assembled on that beautiful springlike day to pay him the last tribute of respect and honor.
