Marple - Lorentz, circa 1905 Early History ----- The settlement of this community dates back to the eighteenth century. It was originally a part of Harrison County, became a part of Lewis County in 1816, and of Upshur County in 1851. The early pioneers were the Allmans, Castos, Regers, Westfalls, Lorentzes, Clarks, and others. They were maily of Dutch descent, and were an honest, sturdy, hardy, industrious, frugal people, and have transmitted these qualities to their descendants in a marked degree. Cornelius Westfall was the first settler on Saul's Run. He was the grandfather of George W. Allman and the late Jacob M. Allman.)

Cornelius and Elizabeth (Helmick) Westfall had 7 children-Jacob C. Westfall (my great great grandfather), Nancy Westfall, Barbara Westfall, John H. Westfall, Peter Cornelius Westfall, Walter M. Westfall, and George A. Westfall.

(1) Cornelius and Elizabeth (Helmick) Westfall's son My gr. gr. grandfather Jacob C. Westfall was born in 1797 in Beverly, Randolph County, Virginia. He died in 1860 in Virginia. He was married 8-8-1818 to Elizabeth Runyon Smith born in 1799 (date of death unknown), the daughter of William Smith (mother's name not known).

(1a) Jacob C. Westfall and Elizabeth Runyon (Smith) Westfall's son my great grandfather Emanuel B. Westfall Sr. was born in 1828 in Virginia and died in 1863 in Roane County, West Virginia. He was killed along with Andrew Cottrell while plowing and cutting brush during the Civil War near Spring Creek, Roane County, West Virginia, on Tuesday September 15, 1863 by a squad of Union Soldiers. He was the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Runyon (Smith) Westfall. He was married to Hannah Kelley in 1856. She was born in 1837 in W. Virginia, the daughter of William and Sarah (Bice) Kelley. She died in 1918 in Gibson City, IL. Emanuel B. Westfall and Hannah (Kelley) Westfall had 2 children--my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall and Emanuel Westfall Jr.

(Note: Manuel Westfall was killed by the Union soldiers with Andy Cottrill, on Spring Creek, above Spencer. This sketch was taken from "Pioneers of Jackson County", by John House, it appears in the section "Tug Fork". I believe the Manuel Westfall mentioned above killed by the Union soldiers was my great grandfather Emanuel B. Westfall who was the father of my grandfather Jasper Mifflin Westfall, and the son of my great great grandfather Jacob C. Westfall. To my knowledge my great grandfather Emanuel Westfall was not a member of any military service during the Civil War. The Union soldiers must have killed him and Andy Cottrell because of a tragic mistake.--------------I recently found this newspaper article in an online search-------Wheeling Intelligencer - September 25, 1863 - From Jackson And Roane Counties – Horrible Murders By Guerrillas. – Mr. McWhorter, member of the House of Delegates, yesterday received a letter from a friend in Ravenswood, on the Ohio river, giving the details of three most horrible murders lately perpetrated by guerrillas in Roane county. The particulars are about as follows: On Monday evening of last week about thirty of these infamous guerrilla scoundrels went to the house of an old gentleman named Glaze on Spring Creek and murdered Marshal Glaze and John McMullen. Marshal Glaze, son of the old gentleman alluded to, and a soldier, had been staying at his father’s house for some days awaiting his discharge papers, he being in bad health. John McMullen, Stephen Glaze and some two or three other soldiers, from the 9th Virginia infantry were on their way home and stopped for the night at old Mr. Glaze’s. The boys went to bed in an out house. Some time during the night the guerrillas came to the house and demanded to know of old Mr. G. where they boys were. Although the old gentleman refused to betray the boys, the guerrillas by some means discovered that they were lying asleep in the out house, and immediately rushed upon them killing McMullen and Glaze at the first assault. The other two or three broke through the ranks of the murderers and succeeded in making their escape. The guerrillas then went to the house of Mr. W. Noyes on Poca and attempted to persuade and then to force his black girl to go with them. The girl refused when she was deliberately murdered. On the Tuesday afternoon following a squad of Federal soldiers, having heard of the outrages above mentioned, came down to Spring Creek and shot Andrew Coteral and Emannel Westfall, two rebels who are charged with having aided and abetted the guerrillas. It is said that old Jim Greathouse, Wylie Dick and Balus Dewees were with the guerrillas when McMullan and Glaze were killed. They were in this city as prisoners not long ago, but were released upon bail. The writer of the letter reflects severely upon the Federal Court for releasing these men who are almost certain to resume their old practices as soon as they get home. It is thought that there can be no peace in Roane county after this outbreak until one or the other of the parties are exterminated. They cannot live together.)

(Note: The article above states Andrew Cottrell and my great grandfather Emanuel Westfall were killed by a squad of Federal soldiers, having heard of the outrages above mentioned, came down to Spring Creek and shot Andrew Coteral and Emannel Westfall, two rebels who are charged with having aided and abetted the guerrillas. That is kind of what I found before in a brief article that they were killed by Union soldiers. I think they were killed by mistake though. I don't think they were involved with aiding and abetting the guerrillas as this article says.)-----------(Note: I recently received the following additional information about the incident in which my great grandfather Emanuel Westfall and Andrew Cottrell were killed by Union Soldiers from Paul Cotral a descendant of Andrew Cottrell - "I have an Article that was kindly sent to me by the Ravenswood library from the Wheeling Intelligencer Newspaper dated Friday September 25th 1863. It dates the incident of my Grandfather Andrew Cottrell and his friend Emanuel Westfall's death, as Tuesday September 15, 1863. The article, in the Intelligencer, was inspired by a letter sent to Mr. McWhorter a Delegate in Wheeling. This Delegate was probably Joseph McWhorter. I transcribed the letter, so it was easier to read. I had to correct spelling, so my computer would accept it, but the content is the same. Andrew was summarily executed with very vague evidence. From what I can tell Mr. Westfall was not even on the list. Several things disturb me about the article in the Wheeling Newspaper. It was inflammatory to just about every political belief, of the time. It was a little vague as to who the witnesses were against him, the two or three men who escaped. In what way did Andrew aid and abet, was there a warrant? The account I tend to believe is Ira Cottrell's. "I don't know why someone who committed a crime or was party to this or any other crime, would not pack his wagon, and "Head out of Dodge", instead of working his farm, it makes no sense at all." --- "What my Take is on the Events of 15 September 1863: Sometime during the day of September 15nd 1863 a column of Federal Regular Troops, of about 100 strong, passed within eyesight of the Cottrell Cabin near Spring Creek West Virginia. A squad of these soldiers broke away, from the main element, and approached the Cottrell cabin. The leader asked the women there where Andrew was located. The women pointed over the hill, in the direction of the field. The soldiers road off in that direction. They returned later and burned all the household records, it is not clear whether they burned the cabin, but the property records had to be reissued in the 1870's to Gilbert N. Cottrell and Mariah Waggoner Cottrell.")

(Note: Here is more information from Paul Cotral, a descendant of Andrew Cotrrell, regarding the incident in which my great grandfather Emanuel Westfall and his friend, Andrew Cottrell, were killed by Union Soldiers -------- "I am having a difficult time finding what unit, or any other information on Sylvester Wesley Cottrell might have been in during the American Civil War. (Note: Sylvester Cottrell married Sarah Jane Jack, whose mother was Catherine (Westfall) Jack, a sister of Emanuel Westfall.) The account in the West Virginia Heritage Encyclopida, closely matches the account in the newspaper article, of September 25, 1863, in the Wheeling Intelligencer. This article states that Andrew was killed and his son Gilbert (Newton Cottrell) was in the southern Army on the Tennessee Ridge near Chattanooga. He and the 2 Conley boys from Reedy, then got a furlogh, and came up the Ohio and Kanawa Rivers traveling at night hiding from Yankee Soldiers, in the day. Andrew Cottrell was shot for his outspoken sympathy and supposed aid to the southern cause, by Northern Bush-Wackers. There were six girls, and Wes (Sylvester Wesley Cottrell?) was at war. The article states the date as 1860, but I believe this is a typo', as it was 1863. Elements of the first New York Cavalery met up with elements of a Pennslyvania unit, to form a column of about 100 mounted soldiers, to hunt down guerillas, called the Night Hawks. A squad of these union soldiers, went after Andrew Cottrell and Emanuel Westfall, then came back to the Cottrell cabin, smashed a trunk, and burned important papers in the fire place. I wondering if Sylvester Cottrell was at war or not at war. I have been through all the records I can't find anything about him on either side. The family search.org does have information, but I don't have access, to the information once I get into the site, I just get error messages. Also, the murders of the "Old Man", and the 2 Union Soldiers, according to the "Child of the Rebellion" timeline was on the 14th of September 1863, and the deaths of Andrew Cottrell and Emanuel Westfall, was on the 15th of September 1863.")

(Note: Here is more information from Paul Cotral, a descendant of Andrew Cotrrell, regarding the incident in which my great grandfather Emanuel Westfall and his friend, Andrew Cottrell, were killed by Union Soldiers --------Marshall W. Glaze in Wheeling - Article dated 25 September 1863, and 11th West Virginia (Union) - It is possible that Andrew Cottrell and Emanuel Westfall were shot by soldiers of the 11th West Virginia (Union) commanded by Colonel Daniel Frost (KIA in 1864). Marshall Glaze was a member of the 11th WV, and may have been injured in the skirmish with guerillas, in the Spencer Area on the 8th of that same month. This may have been a Union reprisal for three murders of unionists. I mapped out the First New York, and their movements, they seemed to be confined to the east part of the state of WV. The 11th operated in Roane, Jackson, Wirt, and a couple of other counties, in the west, predominately, protecting the railroad. As far as I know, John McMullen, he was not in the 11th WV, he might have been regular Army (Union), possibly stationed in Pennsylvania, I found 4 unionists by that name, I'll have to sort out which is him. The 9th Virginia Infantry (Confederate). It is most likely the guerillas that murdered the two Glaze's and McMullen were not interested in the Confederate Soldiers, from the 9th Virginia Infantry.)

(Note: It looks like my great grandfather Emanuel Westfall and his friend, Andrew Cottrell, were shot down in cold blood, executed, by the soldiers without any chance to surrender. There is no evidence they were armed, or that they put up any kind of resistance. They were both shot 3 times each. Here is more information from Paul Cotral, a descendant of Andrew Cotrrell, regarding the incident. --- "No one witnessed the incident, as far as I know, except the soldiers involved. Most of what I have is from the women at the Cottrell Cabin, seeing the squad of soldiers as they rode over the hill, in the direction, of Andrew and Emanuel, who were working in the field. The soldiers came back to the Cottrell cabin sometime later, and burned all the Cottrell Records in the fireplace. This is in a transcription, but I don't know by whom, it was written. I do have a legal record of my Uncle Gilbert repurchasing the land in 1874, along with his mother Maria born (Mariah) Waggoner, from a company called PLW Pool. The pair were shot 3 times each, according to this account, which to me, it sounds like they were summarily executed. I can find no reason for either being executed, maybe because the soldiers wanted them to give up the guerillas that committed the murders, or they could have used this to eliminate anyone that might give them trouble I know my family knew the Greathouse family, and Jim Greathouse, was a supposed guerilla involved in the murder, and they might have been shot because they couldn't or wouldn't give the information to them. We can only guess as to how the soldiers went about interrogation of Andrew or Emanuel; if they even bothered, to do so. I think one of the individuals that was murdered, was in the outfit that shot Andrew and Emanuel, he was at home waiting medical discharge, as a result of a recent skirmish. I wish I could tell you more.")

(Note: I found this information online at a genealogy website which has more information about Andrew Cottrell and his wife Meriah Waggoner, and also refers to the incident involving the killing of Andrew Cottrell and my great grandfather Emanuel Westfall by Yankee soldiers. It says Andrew Cottrell and Manuel Westfall were shot and killed by Yankee soldiers in 1860 while clearing a field near their home in Speed, Roane County. The date is wrong, it was actually 1863 that they were killed rather than 1860. My father always told me the story that my great grandfather was killed while plowing. This website says they were killed while clearing a field. Maybe they were doing both, plowing and clearing brush from the field when they were shot and killed. ----- Meriah Waggoner, born 21 November 1818 in Hackers Creek, West Virginia; died 13 July 1905 in Roane County, West Virginia; married Andrew Cottrell 29 May 1840 in Hackers Creek, West Virginia. Notes for Andrew Cottrell: A large man with red hair and a bad temper. He and Manuel Westfall were shot and killed by Yankee soldiers in 1860 while clearing a field near their home in Speed, Roane County.)(From this genealogy website- http://www.genealogy.com/ftm/m/o/n/Tamra--W-Monroe/GENE5-0004.html)

(1aaa) Minter Jackson Westfall, Sr. and his second wife, Lillie (Bosse) Westfall's son Minter Jackson Westfall, Jr. was born Jan. 28, 1916 in Orlando, Orange County, Florida, and died Jul. 20, 2003 in Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery and Columbarium, Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia. He married Margaret Lucille Shepherd (1921 - 2000).

Minter Jackson Westfall, Jr.'s biography, (written by his son D.N. Westfall) - PROFILE: Minter Jackson Westfall, Jr. was born in Orlando, Florida on January 28, 1916, the only child of his father (MJW, Sr.) and his second wife, Lillie Bosse. There were three "half-siblings" from his father's first marriage - two brothers and a sister - who were all significantly older than Dad. He was active in Boy Scouts, and went on to become an Assistant Scoutmaster, as well as a camp counselor and nature instructor at Camp Carolina. At age 20 he was hired by the Florida Audubon Society to be a US Deputy Game Warden on Merritt Island (site of Kennedy Space Center now.) He and his faithful dog "Buddy" lived alone in a small cabin that his father helped him build, observing and protecting the natural environment. While doing this job he met a professor from Rollins College in Orlando who offered assistance with tuition, and a job as a research assistant if he would come to Rollins College. Attending college had not been an option before because of the cost. Somewhere in this same time period he also worked with the Audubon Society in a project to capture and band mourning doves in Alabama to learn about their migratory habits. At Rollins he was introduced to the subject of entomology and, after graduating, went to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York to work on his Ph.D. World War II interrupted his studies. Due to the loss of his left eye in an accident when he was seven years old, he was not qualified for combat duty, but was slated to be sent to medical school. However, since he had already had a year of graduate training in entomology, the Army reconsidered and assigned him to work in a laboratory situation for his active duty term. He was never deployed overseas and was discharged in California. Always being extremely frugal, he pocketed his discharge allowance and hitchhiked across the country, actually arriving back in Orlando before some of his colleagues who had elected to travel by train. When he returned to Cornell to complete his Ph.D. he met my mother - Margaret Lucille SHEPHERD (daughter of Gladys HOOVER Shepherd) - and they were married September 29, 1945. Mom graduated from Cornell, and I was born the following December (1946). In September 1947, we moved to Gainesville, Florida where Dad had accepted a teaching position in biology at the University of Florida. He had assisted James Needham, his professor in Ithaca, with the majority of the work on a (now) classic text "Dragonflies of North America". That book was updated by Dad and his graduate student Mike May - a boyhood friend of mine - in the 1990s. Dad also published "Damselflies of North America" with Mike May in 1996. Dad taught until he was in his 70s and then continued to do research in an office and lab provided by the university until forced to relocate to Gainesville, GA in 1996 because of my mother's health. The two of them were well known throughout the world in the scientific community concerned with the study of dragonflies and damselflies, and they attended scientific meetings in many foreign locations. Dad always enjoyed the natural wonders, and loved to share his knowledge with others. He also taught Sunday School for many years, and was always involved in church leadership. From 1996 until Mom died in February 2000, Dad was a shining example of devotion and caring, and touched many people's lives with his compassion. He died in July 2003. He and Mom are both buried in Gainesville, GA. (By Minter's son, D.N. Westfall)

Cornelius Westfall Sr.

My great great great great grandfather was Cornelius Abel Westfall Sr. was born Bef. October 15, 1721 in Machackemeck, Deer Park Township, Orange County, New York, and died Bef. March 11, 1783 in Hampshire Co. (West) Virginia. He married 1st Elizabeth Westfall November 20, 1747 in Minisink, New York, daughter of Jacob and Margrietje "Margaret" (De Duyster) Westfall. She was born Bef. January 16, 1725/26 in Sineaquan, New York. He married 2nd Elranor Magdalene Westfall Aft. 1770 in Possibly Hampshire Co., Virginia, daughter of Jacob and Margrietje "Margaret" (De Duyster) Westfall. She was born Bef. October 22, 1721 in Prob. Minisink, New Jersey, and died in Virginia. Baptised Oct. 15, 1721; witnesses Zoloman Freer, Claartjen Westvaal. Machackemeck Dutch Reformed Church, Oct. 11, 1747 [banns published]; Cornelis Westfale y.m. born Machackemeck to Lisabeth Westfael y.d. born Sineaquan, both dwelling there; married November 20.

Cornelius Westfall did not come to West Virginia until about 1774. In 1761, he leased his father's estate from his residence in Essex County, New Jersey. Cornelius first married his cousin Elizabeth Westfall on November 20, 1747 in Minisink Valley, New Jersey. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jacob Westfall, brother of Abel, father of Cornelius. According to the marriage record, Cornelius was born in Machackemeck, New York and Elizabeth in Sineaquan, new York. Cornelius is said to have remarried to Elizabeth's sister Eleanor the widow of David Cole. This is supported by the appearance of Eleanor Westfall in the 1783 Hamshire County tax lists after the death of Cornelius and in the recording of the will. However, Cornelius used the name Magdalene in his will. [W. Lynn Hutchison]. The probate lists her as Eleanor, widow of Cornelius - RNW

(Note: WILL OF CORNELIUS WESTFALL, HAMPSHIRE COUNTY, VA., Dated Feb. 8, 1781; probated, Hampshire Co., Va., March 11, 1783 - "In the name of God Amen, I Cornelius Westfall of the County of Hampshire and the state of Virginia being very sick and weak but of perfect mind and memory ... do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament... The Worldly Estate which it has pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give ... and dispose of in the following manner... First, I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Magdalene Westfall, the privilege of one third of the benefit of my plantation I now dwell on as long as she shall bear the name she is now of. Thirdly I give and bequeath unto my beloved sons, Isaac Westfall and Zachariah Westfall all my lands and [unreadable] an equal share with the rest of my children of the movable estate except such particulars as I shall hereafter mention. I do not mean for Isaac and Zachariah to hold the land without having it appraised and paying to such as shall be hereafter named in particularly such share of land. Fourth, I give and bequeath unto Jacob Westfall one fifth part of the value of the lands, and to Cornelius Westfall one fifth part of the value of the lands, and unto John Westfall one fifth part of the value of the lands, and my will is if my two sons, Cornelius and John, should not return that their part of the Estate shall fall to Isaac and Zachariah. I give and bequeath unto my daughter, Mary Westfall, a feather bed and furniture, a cow and a calf, her choice of my cattle, two ewes, her choice, and an equal share of the movable estate. Now my desire is to have the rest of the moveable estate appraised and let all my children have an equal part. Cornelius Westfall Sr's father Abel Westfall was granted 400 acres of land in Augusta County, VA, October 6, 1748 and appears on the Augusta County, VA tax rolls August 28, 1750. A sale bill of his estate is dated November 15, 1759. 1748 Census; Old Frederick County, VA. He came to Virginia about 1743, along with son John, and nephew Jacob, while elder son Cornelius stayed at Montague, New Jersey.

Chronicles of Scotch Irish Settlement in Virginia Vol. I Augusta County Court Records Order Book No. II Cont. Book XVII Page 432 1745-1748 Inquisition, 15th April 1749, on body of Samuel Decker, son of Garret Decker, on the South Branch of Potomac, by Peter Scholl, Coroner; AbramVanderpool, Able Westfall, Hendrey Scarbrough, James Simpson, JohanesCurtract, Conrad Hoerner, Johann Michael Hoerner, Daniel Hoornbeck, Anthony Logan, George Osborn, John Westfall, Cornelius Curtright (see Curtright above). His death was witnessed by Issac Hornbeck.

Cornelius and his wife Elizabeth moved away from the Delaware River to the Virginia Territory near the south branch of the Potomac River near the present day town of Romney some time after his father Abel. Cornelius's father Abel had migrated there in 1743 with his nephew Jacob and son John, and was granted 400 acres in Augusta County, Virginia in 1748. In 1754 Hampshire County, Virginia was created from Augusta and Frederic Counties, and Romney became the Hampshire County seat in 1762, and later in 1863 became a part of West Virginia when that state was admitted to the union.

(Note: - Abel and his son Johannes/John, and a nephew came to what is now Hardy County, WV [then Hampshire] sometime before 1745, when Abel died there intestate. Cornelius had remained in NY [or NJ] until after his father's death, but came later to claim the property which was involved in a lawsuit. Cornelius who at the time of his father's death and long after lived in the state of New Jersey, moved to Virginia and took possession of the land in question about the year of 1773, and continued to hold it until his death in 1782. Cornelius died in Hampshire Co., in 1782/3. His will was proved there in March 1783. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jacob and Margrieta (de Duyster) Westfall, and she is mentioned in Jacob's will which was proved in Orange Co, NY 13 Dec 1784. Elizabeth Westfall: Baptism: 16 January 1725/26, Accord, NY.)

Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall had 8 children-Cornelius Westfall Jr. (my great great great grandfather), Anna Westfall, Margaret Westfall, Jacob Westfall, John Westfall, Mary Caroline Westfall, Isaac Westfall, Zachariah Westfall.

(1) Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall's son Cornelius Westfall Jr. (my great great great grandfather) was baptised in New York State 1-27-1759. He died in 1844 in Lewis County, Virginia. Cornelius Westfall Jr. married Elizabeth Helmick 6-13-1796 in Beverly, Randolph County, Virginia. They had 7 children-Jacob C. Westfall (my great great grandfather), Nancy Westfall, Barbara Westfall, John Westfall, Peter Cornelius Westfall, Walter M. Westfall, and George A. Westfall.

(2) Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall's daughter Anna Westfall married Abraham Sluiter, and they had these 2 children-Grietje Sluiter born 1767, and Elizabeth Sluiter born 1769.

(3) Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall's daughter Margaret Westfall was born 8-5-1750 in New York, She died in 1795. She married Hezekiah Rosenkranz born 1741/47, died 1819. It is unknown if they had children. Hezekiah Rosenkranz married 2nd to Nancy Simpson and they had 11 children that are mentioned in his will.

(Note: Hezekiah Rosencrance/Rosekrans was one of the early settlers of Randolph County and was the progenitor or all the Rosencrances in Randolph County if not the state of WV. He came to Randolph Co. between 1782 and 1784. He appears in the Hampshire Co. census in 1782 with a family of 4 and was in Jacob Westfall, Sr.'s list of all white men in his former militia company area in 1784 which included what is now Randolph County. Hezekiah was twice married. He married first Margriet/Margaret Westfall. The only proof of this marriage is in the will of Jacob Westfail in which he bequeath to Margriet Westfall, wife of Hezekiah Rosenkrans. According to Westfall historians, this Jacob Westfall was the grandfather of Margriet. It is unknown what happened to Margriet and any children they may have had, but she was gone by 4 May 1795, when he married Nancy Simpson, daughter of John Simpson. According to the 1810 census of Randolph and later census records, none of the children could have been born before 1795. So, Nancy was the mother of all his living children. Hezekiah's will is on record at the Randolph County Court House. It was written 20 Feb. 1819 and probated in April 1819. Where he is buried is uncertain. Some descendants say he is buried at the Arnold Hill Cemetery near the Elkins airport, but it is believed that he is buried in a family cemetery on the Georgetown Road near his "plantation" home. Many years ago a hand hewn fieldstone with markings --legible to some extent with a magnifying glass-indicated it marked a grave of a Rosekrans born 19 Aug 1741 or 1747. Since he was the only Rosencrance in this area that early, it is assumed it was his burial place. The stone today is now gone, broken and trampled in the mud by cattle some years ago. Does it make a difference what year he was born? Of course it does! His father, Jacobus/James, was also married twice. If Hezekiah was born in 1741, his mother would have been Sarah Decker. If he was born in 1747, which a descendant of Solomon Rosenkrans, the youngest child and brother to Hezekiah says, then he is the son of James and Katherine Cole/Cool Rosenkrans. Nancy was much younger than Hezekiah by 20 or 30 years. We are fairly certain she is buried at the Arnold Hill Cemetery. The only thing known about her death is an entry in the George McLean Diary on December 17& 18 1847, which states "18 inches Deep on the 18 Cleered up warm Mother Rosecrovnce Departed this Liffe". Entry made on December 19, 1847, "made a coffin price 5 $." We believe the reference to "Mother Rosecrovnce" must have been Nancy as she would have been the only Rosencrance woman old enough to be called "Mother Rosencrance" by her friends and neighbors. Hezekiah mentioned all 11 of his children in his will including an unborn child. 1. Eli, the oldest son, born about 1796, died 1825 from a falling tree while clearing land. His will recorded in Will Bk. 2, p. 180, bequeathed the estate left him by his father to his brother William, the youngest of his brothers. 2. Catherine was born about 1798. An entry in George McLean Diary on October 15, 1831 states "Catherine Rosencrans departed this life after an illness of 6 months. Made her Coffin". 3. Mary was born about 1800, she was 50 years old in the 1850 census of Barbour County. She died 16 June 1870, in Barbour County. She married the 13 April 1825, William Huett/Hewitt. William who was gone in 1850 was the son of William Hewitt and Margaret Gregg Cornwall. 4. Levi was born about 1803 and married 8 December 1825, Dorcas Westfall, daughter of William Westfall. Tradition says they went west and no further information is available. 5. Hezekiah, Jr. was born about 1807 and married Priscilla Borden of Monogalia County. They were residents of Gilmer County, WV in 1860 census. 6. John was born about 1809 and married Sarah Phillips, daughter of Moses Phillips. Moses Phillips was a devoted friend and neighbor of Hezekiah. Sarah, referred to as "Aunt Sally" by her neighbors, was the community doctor and nurse. 7. Margaret was born about 1806/1810 (She was 54 yrs. old in 1860 and 40 yrs. old in 1850 census records). She married Currence Wilmoth, son of Nicholas and Sidney (Currence) Wilmoth. They lived in Gilmer County in 1860 census and believed to be buried there. Currence Wilmoth was living with their son in the 1880 census of Gilmer County and Margaret was gone. 8. Prudence was born about 1811. She never married and made her home with Margaret and Currence Wilmoth until they went to Gilmer County, then made her home with her brother, John. 9. Lusanna (Susan) was born about 1813, married Jesse C. Wilmoth. They lived in Gilmer County, WV and both are buried there. They were close neighbors of her sister Margaret. 10. James was born about 1816 and died 11 July 1891 and is buried at the Jesse Wamsley Cemetery on Becky's Creek. He married in 1841 Mary Jane Wamsley, daughter of Jesse and Sarah (Mace) Wamsley. 11. William was born 1819 after the death of his father. He is listed in the 1840 census with his mother. It is unknown what happened to him after that date. Some say he died at Webster Station, Grafton, WV, of a fever on his way home from the Civil War. On 27 September 1841 William deeded 100 acres of land to Joseph Hart. This was the land willed to him by his brother, Eli. This land is now part of the Rich Mountain Battlefield. These were called the Sugar Creek lands in the will of Hezekiah. The location of "Sugar Creek" is not known, unless it is now known as Beaver Creek.)

(4) Cornelius and Elizabeth Westfall had a son Jacob Westfall who was born Mar. 11, 1753 in New York. He died in 1795 in Virginia. His wife's name is unknown. Her first name may have been Sarah. They had 2 children-Joseph Westfall (1775-1802), and Jonathan Westfall born 1786.

(Note: Jacob Westfall may have had another son Cornelius Westfall born about 1770, died 1844, who married Elizabeth Helmick in 1796 (who was possibly my gr. gr. gr. grandfather). Jacob was sometimes called Jacob Jr. for his grandfather who had no living son by that name. Jacob was married in Va. before Va. marriage records were kept so it is not known the year nor his wife's name. He had two sons Joseph and Jonathon who in 1795 were orphaned and bound to Hezekiah Rosenkranz the husband of Margaret (Westfall) Rosenkranz (one of the granddaughters mentioned in the will of Jacob Westfall Sr.). In 1796 Joseph Westfall declared himself 21, in 1797 he was declared insane.
