Joseph Edwin Heitzig
10/27/2003 -- Joseph Edwin Heitzig, 76, died at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis after a sudden illness. He was born on the family farm near Fieldon on Sept. 27, 1927, the son of the late Joseph A. and Mary K. (Schmieder) Heitzig. He married the former Frances Leona Collenberger at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville on Feb. 29, 1948. She survives. He attended schools in Westwoods and graduated from Jersey Township High School in Jerseyville. He began working with his brothers on the family farm and worked for several grain elevators in Jerseyville, before he began his career as a truck driver for the Teamsters Local 600. He began with Riss and Co. in St. Louis, where he drove for two years, and then began his 36-year employment with Yellow Freight in St. Louis. After retirement, he was able to spend more time doing the things he truly loved, playing cards and trout fishing with his sons and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, survivors include four sons and their spouses, Bill and Elizabeth Heitzig of Panama City, Fla., Richard and Diane Heitzig of Jerseyville, Robert and Cindy Heitzig of Greenville, Ill., Mark and Rochelle Heitzig of Jerseyville; eight grandchildren, Cody, Dillon, Gavin, Tracy, Nicki, Bill, Shon and Beth; one great-granddaughter, Madalyn Rose; two sisters, Mary Margaret Nowak and Leona Green, both of Jerseyville; and three brothers, Henry Heitzig, Bernard Heitzig and Aloys Heitzig, all of Jerseyville. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Vincent and Cletus Heitzig; and two sisters, Mary and Katherine Heitzig.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral Mass at noon Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville. Frs. D. Patrick Gibbons and William Hembrow will officiate. Burial will be at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville. After committal services, family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville. Crawford Funeral Home (Jacoby Chapel) in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
Bernard John Heitzig
04/06/2004 -- Bernard John Heitzig, 85, died at 8:29 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, in the emergency room at Jersey Community Hospital in Jerseyville. He was born April 24, 1918, in Jersey County, the seventh child of Joseph and Mary (Schmeider) Heitzig. On Oct. 4, 1941, he married the former Eleanor Eberlin at St. Norbert's Catholic Church in Hardin. She survives. He attended schools in Fieldon and in 1940 he and his brother, Vincent, went into farming together and formed Heitzig Brothers Farms. A devoted family man, he was active in his community serving for three years on the Jersey Community Unit 100 School Board, nearly 20 years on the English Township board and 20 years on the Jersey County Board, and received the Distinguished Service Award. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus fourth degree, lifetime member of the Farm Bureau, Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge.
In addition to his wife, surviving are a daughter, Cathy "Coot" Heitzig of Jerseyville; six sons and their wives, Pat and Karen Heitzig of Alton, Mike and Jane Heitzig, Tom and Cathie Heitzig, Jerry and Linda Heitzig, John and Sheri Heitzig, and Tony and Carol Heitzig, all of Jerseyville; 20 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Mary Margaret and Max Nowak of Jerseyville and Leona Green of Jerseyville; and two brothers and their wives, Henry and Bernice Heitzig and Aloys and Mary Lou Heitzig, all of Jerseyville. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Becky Heitzig in 1982; three sisters, Katherine and Mary Heitzig and an infant; and three brothers, Cletus, Vincent and Joseph.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville with a rosary at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon with Father William Hembrow officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Fieldon. Memorials may be given to St. Francis/Holy Ghost schools in Jerseyville or to Masses.
John David Heitzig
10/02/2000 -- John David Heitzig, 65, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at Christian Hospital Northeast in St. Louis County. He was born in Alton on Aug. 30, 1935, one of two children born to the late Cletus and Mary Witt (Fleming) Heitzig. After graduating in 1953 from Jersey Community High School, David enlisted with the U.S. Air Force, where he served for a short time. After returning home, he returned to the family farm where he was the operator of his grain farm until his retirement. During that time, he also became employed at the State Bank of Jerseyville as a teller, eventually becoming a loan officer and the vice president at the time of his retirement May 31, 1984. David still maintained his position on the bank's Board of Directors, a seat he had held since 1971. He married the former Mary Helen Carstens in 1961, and they were the parents of three children. They divorced in 1982.
David is survived by his children and a son-in-law, Steven Heitzig of White Hall, Susan and Danny Rowling of Kane and Sheila Heitzig of Aurora, Colo.; three grandchildren, Haley, Amber and Nicholas; and his sister, Mary Ann "Sug" Rydzeski of Cutchogue, N.Y.; and a very special companion, Gloria Cornell of Jerseyville.
A Mass of Celebration will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. today at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville with Father D. Patrick Gibbons serving as celebrant. Memorials gifts may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville or to masses. Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Doris Lee Heitzig
12/10/2000 -- Doris Lee Heitzig, 75, died at 2 a.m. Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. She was born March 31, 1925, in Jerseyville, the daughter of Hazel (Mourning) Davis of Jerseyville, and the late Thomas Long. For many years, she lived on their farm near Fieldon, where she assisted on the farm and raised her family of five children alongside her husband, Vincent Heitzig, whom she married Dec. 27, 1944, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon. She lived on the farm until his death March 28, 1988, and moved to town shortly thereafter.
She is survived by her five children and their spouses, Vincent Edward and Judy Heitzig of Jerseyville, Debbie and Terry Drainer of Roselle, BeBe and Mike Hodge of South Lake, Texas, Dennis Heitzig of St. Louis and Dianna and Rick Bain of Jerseyville; eight grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and her brother, Richard Long of California. She is also survived by her care giver who became her dear friend, Mary Sterling.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A Mass of Christian Burial will be said at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon. She will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Cemetery in Fieldon. Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association.
Herschel Lee Medford
Died 14-05-1982. Democrat News, May 18, 1982: Herschel Lee Medford, 83, of Fieldon died may 14 at Jersey hospital. Funeral from Gubser home. Rev. Robert Broeder. Burial Guntermann cemetery Near Fieldon. Owned and operated service station and farmed.
Born September 25, 1898 near Fieldon, son of Roy and Mary Schaaf Medford. Leaves wife, former Lida Morrison, whom he married October 6, 1921 in Jerseyville. One Daughter, Doris Spangle of Tucson, Arizona, seven grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Frank Krueger
Died 25-12-1970. 31 December 1970: Funeral services were held at one -thirty o'clock Monday afternoon at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home for Frank Krueger, retired area farmer, whose death occurred at Memorial hospital in Alton on Christmas afternoon. Rev. Leonard Todd of Moro officiated and burial was in Fieldon cemetery. Military graveside rites were conducted. Mr. Krueger, a son of the late Henry and Barbara Hagen Krueger, was born in Fieldon. His age at the time of death was seventy four years, nine months and fourteen days.
Mr. Krueger was in military service in World War I. His survivors are one son, Maurice Williams of Jerseyville, two brothers, Emil Krueger of Wood River and Anthony Krueger of Jerseyville; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Stahlhut of East Alton and Mrs. Edna Hart of Mcleansboro, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Harold L. Krueger Sr.
Fieldon - Harold L. Krueger Sr., 89, died at 12 :45 Friday, 11 December 1987 at Garnet's Chateau after a lengthy illness. a farmer, who retired in 1979, he served 20 years as supervisor in Richwoods township of Jersey County. He was born in Fieldon, son of the late Louis and Emma (Kessler) Krueger. He married the former Leola Busch of Fieldon on 26 October 1921 in Belleville. She survives.
Also surviving are one son, Harold L. Krueger, Jr. of Godfrey; two granddaughters; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Gubser Funeral Home. Masonic services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday and will be performed by Fieldon Masonic Lodge 592 AF & AM funeral services will be Gubser Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Monday with Rev. Jean Erb officiating. Burial will be in Fieldon cemetery. Memorials will go to the organ fund of the United Church of Christ in Fieldon, of which he was a member.
Miss Hilda F. Krueger
Died 06-02-1979. Hilda F. Krueger, of Fieldon, Assistant Postmaster of the Fieldon post office, died at 5:35 a.m. on 6 February at Jersey Community Hospital. Miss Krueger was born on 3 March 1912 in Fieldon, the daughter of the Late L. J. and Emma Kessler Krueger.
She is survived by two brothers, Harold and Albert Krueger, both of Fieldon. She was preceded in death by two brothers. Funeral services were held at 1:30 today (February 8) at the Fieldon United Church of Christ, Rev. Robert Broeder officiating, with burial in the Fieldon cemetery. Eastern Star services were held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home where visitation was held that evening and Thursday from 10 a.m. until the funeral time. The Fieldon United Church of Christ has been named as a memorial.
Charles (Bud) Braxton Wall
Died 26-11-1971. Charles (Bub) Braxton Wall, 80, of Fieldon, died November 26, at his home. A retired filling station operator, he was born August 27, 1891 in Callaway County, KY, a son of Charles & Eunice (Lady) Wall. Mr Wall was a member of the Sardis Methodist Church in Eddyville, KY, and Fieldon Masonic Lodge.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Miss Rillie Wall of Fieldon and Mrs Don (Iris) Vassar of Alton; 3 grandchildren; 1 brother, Joe Wall of Kuttawa, KY; 1 sister, Mrs Myrtle Zieglar of Paducah, KY. His wife; 3 sons; 1 daughter, and his parents preceded him in death. Final rites were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev Francis Varble conducted the services and burial was in Fieldon Cemetery.
James D. Fessler
James D. Fessler, 42, of Jerseyville, died at Alton Memorial hospital July 28, 1984, as a result of an explosion at Olin's East Alton plant where he had worked for 20 years.
Fessler had worked all of his 20 years in the ammunitions department of Olin's Winchester group operations plant. Primer powder was being mixed at the time of the explosion. The area where the blast occurred is in the center of the Olin plant on the "primer island". Fessler had worked alone in the small wooden building which is enclosed by concrete walls. An intensive investigation is being conducted by Olin Corporation. Fessler was born April 18, 1942 in Alton, son of James H. & Mary M. (Stafford) Fessler of Dow.
His survivors include his wife, Juanita E. (Hooper) Fessler whom he married June 20, 1964 in Jerseyville; 1 son, Danny; 2 daughters, Kathy and Becky Fessler, at home; his parents; 5 sisters, June Moore of Jerseyville, Margaret Bartles, Dorsey, Ruth Jacoby, Brighton, Norma Cooksey, Delavan and Evelyn Stufflebeam, Summerville, SC. 1 sister preceded him in death. Services were conducted at Gubser Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. R. E. George officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Memorials may be given to Methodist children's home at Mt. Vernon.
Mrs. Anna Marie Russell
Died 07-30-1970. Anna Marie Russell, 71, of Jerseyville died Friday am at Jersey Community hospital. Rev. Ronald Hastie of Jerseyville officiated and interment was in Oak Grove cemetery. Born October 1, 1898 at Fieldon, she was the daughter of James & Elizabeth (Boomer) Minard. Her husband, Charles W. Russell preceded her in death.
Her survivors are 2 daughters, Mrs. Leona Roe of Jerseyville and Mrs. Esther Branham of Delhi; 5 sons, John Russell of Hettick, Alfred, Charles and Donald of Jerseyville and Clarence (Pat) of Kane; 24 grandchildren; 2 Brothers, Curtis Minard of Warren, Michigan, and William Minard of Jerseyville. Her husband, 2 sons, 2 brothers and 2 sisters, preceded her in death.
Charles William Russell
Died 01-21-1970. Charles William Russell, 80, of Jerseyville died January 21, at Jersey Community hospital. Services were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 pm at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where visitation was held Friday pm. Rev. Roy Hill of Gillespie officiated at the rites. A retired farmer, he was born July 5, 1889 in Oswego, KS, the son of Reuben & Martha (Hand) Russell.
He is survived by his wife, Anna (Minard?) Russell; 5 sons, John of Hettick, Clarence of Kane, Alfred, Charles and Donald of Jerseyville; 2 daughters, Mrs. Leona Strebel of Jerseyville and Mrs. Esther Branham of Delhi; 24 grandchildren; 7 g-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Paul Russell of Carrollton and Harold Russell of Jerseyville; and 1 sister Mrs. Pearl McGowen, also of Jerseyville. 2 sons preceded him in death.
Paul Russell Jr
Paul Russell Jr., 80, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003, at his home. He was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Jerseyville to Paul J. and Ruth (Barrett) Russell. He married the former Ruth Ewing on Sept. 22, 1952, in Piggott, Ark.. She died Aug. 30, 1998. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of the Jerseyville American Legion, the Moose Lodge and Masonic Lodge. He loved hunting and lived life to the hilt. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Cox of Olmsted, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Sandra and her husband, Ronald, Goble of Alton and Barbara Holtmann of Troy; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margie Scheffel of Jerseyville. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Margery Newingham. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial with full military rites will be at Borlin Cemetery southwest of Carrollton. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. George L. Russell Sr.
Died 03-14-1968. George L. Russell, Sr., 74 years, 10 months, and 3 days, died Friday at 5:55 am at his home on Locke St., Jerseyville. Although he had been in ill health for some time his death was unexpected. Services were held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where visitation was held. Rev. Bekman Day of Dexter, Missouri, officiated with interment in Oak Grove cemetery. Mr. Russell was a son of the late Rueben & Martha (Hand) Russell, and was born May 11, 1894, at Oswego, KS. He had resided in Jerseyville 39 years and was a member of Wesleyan Church on Short St.
Surviving Mr. Russell are his wife, Mrs. Nora Russell of Jerseyville, 4 sons, George E. (Bud) Russell, Jr., Ralph Russell, Herschel Russell and Carl Russell, all of Jerseyville; 1 daughter, Miss Mildred Russell of Jerseyville; 3 Step-sons, Jake Dean of Jerseyville, Tom Dean of Eldred and James Dean of Carrollton; 3 step daughters, Mrs. Irwin Hamilton of Fieldon, Mrs. Everett Johnson of Kane and Mrs. Butkovich of Wood River; 12 grandchildren; 24 g-grandchildren; 3 brothers, Charles and Harold Russell of Jerseyville and Paul Russell of Carrollton; and 1 sister Mrs. Pearl McGowen of Jerseyville.
Mrs. Nora B. Russell
Died 01-1979. Nora B. Russell, 85, of Locke St., Jerseyville died at 5:20 am January 6 at Jersey Community hospital. She was born August 30, 1892 in Scott County, the daughter of Edward & Emma (Powell) Meppin. She married George L. Russell Sr., in 1957 and he died March 14, 1969.
She is survived by 1 son, Jacob Dean of Jerseyville; 2 daughters, Mrs. Alice Hamilton of Fieldon and Mrs. Betty Johnson of Kane, 21 grandchildren and 33 g-grandchildren. Services were held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, at 1:30 pm January 8, Brother Joe Rowlett officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery
George "Bud" Russell
George "Bud" Russell, 71, died at 1:14 pm Friday, May 1, 1987, at St. Luke hospital west in Chesterfield, Missouri. Born in Jersey County, son of the late George L. & Maggie (Welch) Russell, he married Dorothy Foster on June 27, 1934, in Jerseyville. She survives.
He was a co-owner of Bud Russell & Son Contractors in Jerseyville for 50 years and also part owner of Busch Bowling Alley in Jerseyville. Besides his wife, the WWII Army veteran is survived by 3 sons, Ralph Eugene, Robert Joseph and Roger William, all of Jerseyville; 1 Daughter, Priscilla Ann Prough of Kane; 10 grandchildren; 12 g-grandchildren; 1 sister Mildred Russell of Jerseyville; and 2 brothers, Herschel and Carl Russell both of Jerseyville.
Visitation will be from 4-9 pm Sunday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Masonic services will be held at 6:30 pm. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 pm Monday at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oak Grove cemetery, with full military rites conducted by American Legion Post 492 of Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to American Cancer Society.
Ralph Lavern Russell
Died 27-02-1983. Ralph Lavern Russell, 66, Route 4 Jerseyville, was pronounced dead at 7:45 pm February 27 at the scene of an accident on Route 16 at Snell Corner on Centennial Road. Services were conducted at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville, by Rev. Robert Broeder with burial in Oak Grove cemetery.
Mr. Russell retired as a construction supervisor from Jersey County Construction in 1979. He was a son of the late George & Maggie (Welch) Russell and married Kathryn (McAdams) Russell on February 5, 1938.
His survivors are his wife; 3 daughters, Fran Fosha and Sharon Looper of Jerseyville and Gloria McClary of Brighton; 3 brothers, Herschel, Bud and Carl of Jerseyville; and 1 sister Mildred Russell, Jerseyville; 8 grandchildren and 3 g-grandchildren. Memorials may be given to Peace United Church of Christ or sids project. A coroner's inquest in pending.
Mrs. Kathryn "Katie" Russell
Died 13-06-1983. Kathryn "Katie" Russell, 63, 302 E. Miller Drive, Jerseyville died unexpectedly at 11:58 pm June 13 at Jersey Community hospital from an apparent heart attack. Services were held Thursday afternoon at Peace United Church of Christ with Rev. Henry Lippert officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery. Born May 29, 1920 at Eldred in Greene County to the late George & Lettie (Winchell) McAdams, she was a cook at the Donut Kitchen restaurant. Mrs. Russell was a charter member of the Women of the Moose and Women of the Elks.
Her husband, Ralph L. Russell whom she married on February 5, 1938 at St. Charles, Missouri, died February 27 this year. She is survived by 3 Daughters, Fran Fosha and Sharon Looper of Jerseyville and Gloria McClary of Brighton; 1 brother, Paul McAdams of St. Joseph, Mich. and 1 sister Doris Arter of Jerseyville; 8 grandchildren and 3 g-grandchildren. Memorials may be given to the church building fund and the Heart Fund.
Ruben Harold Russell
Ruben Harold Russell, 65 years, 5 months, and 3 days, a retired carpenter of Jerseyville died Wednesday am. Services were held at 1:30 pm Friday at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Rev. Orlen Lane and Rev. Louis Kappler officiated and burial was in Oak Grove cemetery.
Visitation was held Thursday afternoon. Mr. Russell, a son of the late Reuben & Martha (Hand) Russell, was born in KS. His health had been impaired since incurring injuries in a truck accident several years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lillian Russell; 1 brother, Paul of Carrollton, and 1 sister Mrs. Pearl McGowen of Jerseyville. 1 son, Richard Harold, 3 brothers and 1 sister preceded him in death.
Mrs. Clara Viola Lyming
Jerseyville - Clara Viola Lyming, 84, died at 2:06 am today, 8 Jan. 1987 at St. Joseph's hospital in Alton. She was born in Fieldon, a daughter of the late Jim and Elizabeth Isabelle Scott. In March 1929, in Fieldon, she married John Lyming Sr., and he died 13 Sep. 1962.
Surviving are a son, John Lyming, Jr. of Jerseyville; a daughter, Hazel Scott Edwards of Alton; six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; five brothers, Jim and Herb Scott, both of Jerseyville, John Scott of Fieldon, Charlie Scott of Otterville and Steve Scott of Kane; and two sisters, Rosie Denham and Tacy Freand, both of Jerseyville.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 pm Friday with services at 2 pm Saturday at Jacoby Brothers funeral home in Jerseyville. Burial will be at Oak Grove cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the building fund of Hope Lutheran church in Jerseyville.
John Lyming Jr.
John Lyming Jr., 83, died at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, at St. Louis University Hospital. He was born in Fieldon on Jan. 18, 1930, one of two children born to the late John and Clara Viola (Scott) Lyming Sr. John served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and retired in 1992 as a expeditor/material handler at Olin Corporation in East Alton after 41 years of dedicated service. Always one to visit with people, John became a greeter at the Jerseyville Wal-Mart after his retirement, where he was able to continue to enjoy being around people. He married the former Christina McAdams on June 7, 1952, at the Otterville Baptist Church, and together they have raised two sons, and shared the last 60 years together.
Surviving are his wife, Christina Lyming of Jerseyville; his two sons and a daughter-in-law, John David Lyming of Jerseyville, and Daniel Henry and Aimee Lyming of Cape Fair, Mo.; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Hazel Edwards. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Hope Lutheran Church in Jerseyville, with the Rev. G. Robert Heimgartner officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites. Memorials may be given to the Hope Lutheran Church in Jerseyville, where he was a longtime and loyal member.
William Orville Bethel
William Orville Bethel, born 02-04-1903, Jersey County, Illinois, died 09-29-1976, buried Rosedale cemetery. William Orville Bethel, 73, of Greenwood Manor nursing home, died there on Sept. 29. Services were held at the Otterville Baptist Church, H. Rev Vale Walkington officiated. Burial was in Rosedale cemetery. He was born Apr. 2, 1903 in Jersey county, a son of Rollin H. & Mary E. (White) Bethel. Bethel was a member of the Moose Lodge for 28 yrs.

John Neely Powers
From the Jerseyville Republican Newspaper, dated Oct. 17, 1918, John Neely Powers died Sunday morning at Camp Custer, Mich., of influenza. He was a son of james D. Powers, Jerseyville, and left for camp September 15th. The body was brought to Jerseyville Tuesday noon where the funeral was held wednesday at 2 p.m. at the residence of Loren Erwin. Deceased is survived by his father, sister, Mrs. Loren erwin, three brothers, Andrew, James and Lewis, and aunt, Mrs. James Dunphy.
Mrs. Esta L. Flowers
Esta L. Flowers, 85, of Carrollton, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 21, 2009, at Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton. Born near Eldred Sept. 13, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Alfred H. and Lula A. Tucker Taylor. She married Murrel Flowers on July 3, 1943, in St. Charles, Mo., and he preceded her in death June 4, 1990. Surviving are two sons, Ron (wife, Kathy) Flowers of Jerseyville and Terry Flowers; a daughter, Bonnie Flowers of Carrollton; and a special "daughter," Sue Ellen Houseman of Carrollton. There are six grandchildren, Tina (husband, Don) Miller, Tammy Flowers, Jamie (fiancé, John Shortal) Flowers, Chad (fiancée, Tami Taylor) Flowers, Douglas (dear companion, Emily Stahl) Flowers and Dustin (wife, Trish) Houseman; and eight great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Taylor Miller, Catherine Shortal and Taylor, Kayla, Dustin Paul, Brendan and Jordyn Houseman. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; six brothers, Arnold, William, John, Charles Alvin, Raymond and Curtis Taylor; and three sisters, Thelma Hires, Mary Wollenweber and Roberta Taylor.
Esta worked at the old Ben Franklin 5 &10 and later at J & A Variety and was payment collector for Whiteway Sanitation. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Carrollton and the Ladies Aid Society of the church. She was a past member of the BPW. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the Carrollton City Cemetery. Rev. Louis Edward Kappler
The Rev. Louis Edward Kappler, 98, died peacefully at 10:20 p.m. Thursday, April 28, 2011, at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Louis was born on Dec. 27, 1912 in Jersey County on of four sons and three daughters born to Henry and Lillie (Groppel) Kappler. He attended the rural school of Irene and Otterville public schools and was a retired home contractor and a lifelong Christian, ministering at the Gospel Assembly Church in Jerseyville where he was a lifelong minister for a 10 year period. He married the former Mary Elizabeth Robbins on Jan. 18, 1933, in Carrollton. She died on Aug. 4, 1982.
Surviving are his eight children and their spouses, Edith M. and Jessie Lester of Jerseyville, Robert L. and Janie Ann Kappler of Pine Bluff, Ark., Esther and Robert Evans, Ruth Ann McClintock, Violet and William Clendenny, E. Darlene and Douglas Miller, all of Jerseyville, Carolyn and Kenneth Plummer of Rosedale and David and Omok Kappler of Jerseyville; a son-in-law, Rodney Ross of Carrollton; 20 Grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and numerous stepgrandchildren. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, M. Pearl Ross; three sisters, Helen Kappler, Elizabeth Scarber and Ruth Phipps; and three brothers, George Kappler, Eugene Kappler, and Edwin Kappler. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at the Gospel Assembly Church in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, May 2. The Revs. Clyde Shaw and Paul Lynn will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the Gospel Assembly Church in Jerseyville.
James Russell Howell
JERSEYVILLE - James Russell Howell, 78, died at 1:30 a.m., Thursday, January 8, 2015, at the Jefferson Barracks Medical Center in St. Louis, Mo. He was born in St. Charles, Mo. on December 2, 1936, and was the son of the late Arthur and Vallie Lorraine (Simpson) Howell. James graduated in 1954 from St. Charles High School, and served his country with the U.S. Army. For many years he owned and operated Howell's Midway Station near Delhi, and had also worked as a mechanic at Sunderland Motor Company in Jerseyville. He married the former Mary Joanne Killion on June 7, 1958, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and she passed away on Nov. 18, 2012. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Chuck Brainerd of Grafton; three sons and daughters-in-law, John and Jackie Howell and Russell "Pat" and Laura Howell all of Jerseyville, and Eugene "Gene" and Paula Howell of Dow; ten grandchildren, Joseph Howell and Justin Howell both of Mt. Vernon, Jacob Howell, Nicholas Howell, Natalie Howell all of Jerseyville, Erick Howell, Matthew Howell, Chevi Pack, and Chase Pack all of Dow, and Lydia Hamilton of Jerseyville; a sister, Patty Hammett of St. Charles, Mo. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Louis Howell on Feb. 10, 2001; a grandson, Dyaln Howell; three brothers, Oscar Howell, Arthur Howell Jr., and Carl Howell; and a sister, Eileen Thomas. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 12, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville, with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites. Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville.
Dr. Albert Kenneth Van Walleghen
JERSEYVILLE — Dr. Albert Kenneth Van Walleghen, 91, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away at 9:45 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 15, 2017 at the Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home. He was born May 19, 1925, in Shawnee, Kansas, and was the son of Arthur and Irma (Van Sittert) Van Walleghen. He grew up on the family truck farm with his brother, Sonny, and his sister Marie. He attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, where he completed his doctorate of Veterinary Medicine at the age of 21. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army as a meat inspector, while he continued his studies. He married the love of his life, Mary Ann Schaeffer, on June 24, 1946, in Newton, Kansas, and moved to White Hall, Illinois, shortly thereafter, where he accepted a job with a veterinary pharmaceutical company. In 1948, he took over the veterinary practice of Dr. Sealey in Jerseyville, and he continued to practice and build his business until his retirement in 1987. After 33 years of marriage, Mary Ann passed away on Nov. 18, 1979. He married Reta (Schaeffer) Crawford, who was Mary Ann's sister, in 1983, and they shared 21 years together before her death on June 30, 2004. Over the years, "Doc Van", served on numerous boards including the Jersey County Board of Supervisors, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Board, Illinois Veterinary Medical Association and was a member of the founding boards of both Lewis & Clark Community College in Godfrey and the Jersey County Housing Authority. His greatest pride were his six children and they survive along with their spouses, Gail and Dennis Naughton of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, John and Charlene Van Walleghen of Wichita, Kansas, Joe and Pat Van Walleghen of O'Fallon, Missouri., Jim Van Walleghen of Wichita, Dr. Donald Van Walleghen and David Van Walleghen both of Jerseyville; 10 grandchildren, Greg and Ivette Naughton, Luke and Katie Naughton, Nick and Rhiannon Naughton, Alex, Mary Ann, and Lindsay Van Walleghen, John and Stacy Van Walleghen, Olivia, Vincent and Louis Van Walleghen; five great-grandchildren, Henry and Oscar Naughton, Steven, Zoe and Lauren Van Walleghen; and a sister-in-law, Berdene Schaeffer Collins. In addition to his parents, and his wife, Mary Ann and Reta, he was preceded in death by his brother, Sonny; his sister, Marie; along with many family and friends. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19 at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where a Rosary Recitation will take place at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Patrick Gibbons officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemtery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be given to the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church Mural Fund.
